IRISH LIFE DUBLIN MARATHON, October 26
Danielle Mesfin (USA) and Ebbise Adunya (Ethiopia) claimed victories at the Dublin Marathon on Sunday, but most of the post-race coverage in Ireland focused on Ava Crean, who won the Irish women’s title aged just 19.
When Crane first started running during the pandemic, he struggled to cover more than 500 meters without walking and did most of his training on a treadmill. “I didn’t want to run out because I was kind of embarrassed,” she said.
But she persevered and after running 2:49:00 in her marathon debut in Manchester this spring, followed by 2:43:26 in Limerick in May, she beat 45-year-old Ann Marie McGlynn in Dublin in 2:34:11 as the latter sought her third national marathon title in 22:6 as she c.
Crane was a basketball player as a teenager but turned to marathon-style running and finished sixth in Dublin on a wet and windy day.
David McGlynn won the men’s Irish title in the 22,500-capacity stadium, with the 26-year-old Waterford runner clocking 2:11:01, 4 minutes off his personal best.
Eritrea-born, Arizona-based American Mesfin won the men’s race in 2:08:51.
Ethiopia’s Manazot Siyum clocked 2:09:09 to beat Sweden’s Samuel Tsegaye to third in 2:09:2.
Ethiopian athletes took the podium in the women’s race with Ebenezer World, also just 19, first in 2:26:28, followed by Kena Girma in 2:26:32 and Atsede Baysa Tir in 2:27:1.
