With the release of the TRK-R versions of its TP5 and TP5x golf balls, TaylorMade has joined Titleist in offering versions of its flagship golf balls optimized to work with radar-based launch monitors in flight environments limited.
Why TRK-R?
As we’ve discussed before, radar-based launch monitors like Trackman and Flightscope struggle to accurately capture roll rate in flight-restricted environments. The problem is exacerbated for players with higher swing speeds where there is even less time for equipment that powers multiple internal devices to track the golf ball.
The TRK-R seeks to solve, or at least mitigate, the issue of rev range capture.
Inlaid silver
While Titleist hasn’t been particularly specific about how it creates the radar-reflective mark that makes the RCT work, TaylorMade says its approach uses a small amount of liquid silver placed in what the company describes as a non-symmetric infinity pattern.
Reflective markings allow radar-based launch monitors to more accurately capture roll speed. TaylorMade notes that the embedded silver does not affect performance, and although it is not specifically addressed in the information provided by the company, it is possible that the new balls could help avoid wolves.
The balls are USGA listed which means they can be used for tournament play.
The release of the TP5 TRK-R balls aligns with TaylorMade’s other fitting initiatives such as Foresight-ready QI35 SelectFit heads with integrated markers and a new approach to shaft fitting based on the degree of closure.
Price and availability
The TP5 and TP5x TRK-R golf balls will retail for $64.99 per dozen. You can purchase them directly from TaylorMade.com and they are available for fitting at certified TaylorMade fitting locations starting January 23rd.
