During Taylormade’s MG3 wedge test more than four years ago, Collin Morikawa approached Taylormade’s director for creating handcuffs and wedges, Matt Bovee and gave some reactions.
“You can’t make a wedge feel soft enough,” Morikawa said.
Greg Cesario i Taylormade accepted the challenge.
“Oh, I can make him feel very gentle for you,” Golfsman Master Wedge Master of Tayormade told.
The most obvious way to make a wedge feel softer is to create it from carbon steel.
Whereas forged wedges are common in the Japanese market, here in the US, they are more of a commodity, with only a limited number of OEMs offering them with retail. Most options are cast.
Morikawa’s comment began the stylists’ attempt to create a fake wedge in tall clothing, and that journey culminated in the new MG5 Tayormade wedges, the fifth repetition of their popular ground line.
Here are four things to know about the new Taylormade Mg5 wedges as well as my thoughts.
1 from the prototype to the finished product
While Tayormade is not a stranger who falsifies handcuffs, adding wedges to the list of products they create meant to make sure they simply had enough manufacturing capacities to do it.
Cesario said the first time staff players Taylormade saw a forged prototype was a forged MG4 prototype almost four years ago during that phase of testing.
They sent it to the benefits of the tournament and to the staff professionals, and many of the subjective reactions were that the wedges were softer.

Until this summer, taylormade had almost everything oppressed and they started planting mg proto, which was essentially the same as the new Mg5, only with a different cosmetic package.
“And Mg Proto was a first type of getting this,” Bovee said, “here’s a hint of what cosmetics will look like.
2. Expanding offers between
With MG4, Taylormade offered two different grinding options for each level of swelling, low, standard and high.
But Taylormade’s designers realized that 85 percent of the players were falling into the middle category of Frame. So, with MG5, they have rewritten the grind offers to have three different opportunities in the standard category and one each in both high and low swelling. Next to an offer that Cesario calls “the closest thing to a perfect set of grinding, shapes and feel in a package.”

In addition to grinding SB, Full Standard Grind, which has a new four -way Kamber for added skill, Taylormade is introducing new SC and SX, which she tears with the release of protos mg.
Grind Sc contains a form of grinding C with effective inflating pushed forward in single.
“It has a very cute C shape, almost like an elongated C shape that created a lot of skill, where when you can manipulate the face angle, that the main skirt still stands relatively at the same height,” Cesario said.
3. The new SX grind
With SX Grind, Cesario said they have seen more tendencies of the best players, including pro tour, using wider wedges for more forgiveness. The unique unique relief of the SX Reverse Cilliging Edge allows the wedge to have the only wide, but still have the main edge to sit down on the ground when it opens.
“I looked at some of our high fingertips high. This is of course a wider design of the soul and I said,” I can create a broad spirit that has an amazing amount of versatility that plays relatively more in the middle category, “he added.

SX also has a completely different shape compared to other MG5 lobe wedges. It has a main more rounded advantage and then a light “neck” design that attracts to dig a little more compensation to help mix the new shape with the rest of the family.
“Type of a small return to some old school wedges from the 60s and 1970s,” Cesario said. “And I also grew slightly out of compensation in this because you have to have to mix different parts of the wedge. You can not only touch one thing without touching the other to bring symmetry to a look.”
4. More rotation in more conditions
Taylormade’s raw face technology returns, but with a new habit, with steep walls, with saws and a new rotating technology.

The new rotation design results in an engraved face deeper than Mg4 and functions as a tire on a tire to channel water away from the golf ball into influence.
Creating more rotation is always a goal for OEM, but they end up limited by USGA rules than rolls they can create from the perfect lies of the road. With the new rotation tread and grooves in Mg5, the goal is to create more rotation from wet and rough lies.
My thoughts!
Two great things to underline here are the new forged construction and the new SX SX.
The matching of the fake feeling in the wedge and the handcuffs seems like a thoughtless decision, and has been popular in the Japanese market forever; The only question is whether the US market would be willing to pay for it.
With Tayraormade that has resolved the production challenges, it will be interesting to see how their portion of the wedge market changes, given that they are the first of three or four wedge vendors in the US market to start a forged wedge.
Wide -view Grind adds an option that many players will probably get into a single forgiving design that does not have an extremely aggressive amount of swelling.
