Around this time last year, one of the hottest hammers on the market was that TaylorMade Spider Tour X Proto. Everyone was interested in getting their hands on the milled face Spider X prototype that Scottie Scheffler was experimenting with.
The retail Spider Tour X Proto that TaylorMade sold wasn’t quite the same as what Scheffler was using on the PGA Tour, but it was close enough to promote rubber purchases.

In 2024, we saw Scheffler have a big year with his Spider, albeit one closer to the stock Spider Tour X offering than the milled-faced prototype. I’m sure TaylorMade sold a lot of those Spider models too, but the Spider Tour X Proto was even cooler.
It is also back in black

Just in time for Black Friday, TaylorMade is relaunching the Spider Tour X Proto. This time, there are some new options. This time, you can buy your Spider Tour X Proto with a small slope or L-neck. You can also choose the original metal finish or a completely dark version.

Is your spider ground or soft?

Do you prefer a milled face putter or do you prefer an insert? We definitely have two camps out there on this issue, and they’re unlikely to budge from their face-preference conviction.
For the record, the correct face style is one that puts the ball in the hole.
(And it’s ground metal, obviously.)

Regardless, the best thing about the Spider Tour X Proto is that it allows the grind-faced gamer to finally put a Spider in the game.
Final thoughts on TaylorMade Spider Tour X Proto Black putters

I was surprised by this publication. The Spider Tour X Proto was a hot player back in November 2023, but it seems so much has changed in the tire market since then. Case in point: Scheffler switches from his Spider Tour X Proto spinner to a version of the Spider Tour X with an insert.
Will players still flock to Spider Tour X Proto like last year?

I think so. The Spider Tour X Proto in Black is a hot-looking version of the Spider. The milled face and killer aesthetic are just the kind of things people look for in a retail barrel.
Some will love the feel and performance of the milled face, while others are drawn to the Spider Tour X Proto Black’s off-the-shelf look. For some, getting both of these things will be worth the $500 price tag.
