Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis is off to an early start building hype for his next fight against Lamont Roach on December 14th in Houston. Earlier today, Tank (30-0, 28 KOs) warned Roach on X “not to talk so much” when he got a little mature.
Tank now has to start the fake hype because the fans are turned off by this mismatch and see it for what it is: another cherry pick for Gervonta on PPV. To sell this fight, Tank will have to work overtime, create WWE-esque marketing hype by being theatrical and going over the top.
He’ll have to come up with some acting skits to make it look like a play to get fans involved enough to want to buy in droves on PPV. If Tank acts his way through the promotion and comes up with daily drama stuff, it could do well. It will still be a complete mismatch, but it will sell.
Roach (25-1-1, 10 KOs) is coming up in weight from super featherweight, where he recently worked his way to a close 12-round split decision win over Hector Luis Garcia. This is the same guy who knocked out Tank in nine rounds in January 2023. Hector is by far Roach’s best win on his 10-year resume.
Roach’s other best wins were against 40-year-old Jonathan Oquendo and 35-year-old Rene Alvarado. He lost to Jamel Herring in 2019 and never avenged the defeat.
It looks like Tank Davis can’t rely on David Benavidez to fight on his undercard and bring in the PPV buys. He could face David Morrell in their own card in January, which could do well on PPV. This is a much better fight than Tank vs. Roach.
I advise you not to talk so much..it can be bad for you. You already know that YO
