Gervonta Davis showed off his dazzling hand speed today as he worked out on the mitts with trainer Barry Hunter, preparing for the title defense of his WBA lightweight belt against Lamont Roach on March 1st at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York .
Mitts Master
Davis looks great on mitts, but that’s exaggerated because his opponent, super featherweight Roach, has no power and is outmatched in this fight. It would be nice if Tank worked out like a dog and fought someone with actual talent. Then you get interested in watching him hit the mitts, but not when it’s another cherry-pick like everything else during Davis’ carefully managed 12-year professional career.
Tank Davis’ last seven opponents
– Frank Martin
– Ryan Garcia
– Hector Garcia
– Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero
– Isaac Cruz
– Mario Barrios
– Leo Santa Cruz
That’s a mediocre bunch there, and none of them are relevant fighters at lightweight, not one. So, it’s great that Tank Davis excels at hitting mitts, but it’s not worth it when you’re facing marginal opposition on PPV for $75. Those type of fights should be free because they are matches that are meant to be mismatched.
Tank’s form looked a lot like Floyd Mayweather Jr, his former promoter, in his mitt workouts. But the two of them couldn’t be further apart in fighting style. Fortunately, Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) is much more entertaining to watch than Floyd Jr. wash.
Still, Tank is a lot like Mayweather with his cherry picking in addition to his mitt workouts. Floyd has been the best at picking them off and moving away from the dangerous predators throughout his career. Now Tank follows his safety-first blueprint.
Where is the challenge?
Fans want to see Tank knock out Roach (25-1-1, 15 KOs) and then start fighting the opposition that has a chance to beat him. For the most part, Davis or his management always picked fighters where he was heavily favored.
