The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has reached its conclusion and all eyes are now on the blockbuster semi-final India and England. With their place in the final at stake, the two cricketers are all set to renew their fierce rivalry in what promises to be a high-tension encounter in the heavyweight division. India showed remarkable consistency throughout the tournament, while England relied on an aggressive batting template to storm the knockouts.
As the expectations grew, the former Indian captain and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar weighed what might decide the outcome of this important contest. Gavaskar believes two players in particular will hold the key if India beat England and qualify for the final.
Sunil Gavaskar names two key stars for India in the top-flight game
Gavaskar set the spearhead pacer jasprit bumrah As India’s most vital weapon against England’s explosive top. According to the former player, Bumrah needs to be released early in the powerplay to dismantle England’s batting core.
“I believe he should bowl at least twice in the powerplay because as a new bowler, if he can get the first wickets – Jos Buttler, Phil Salt and Harry Brook – he will almost break the back of the England batting.” Gavaskar said.
He further explained that delaying Bumrah’s introduction gives England’s openers time to settle.
“If Bumrah comes to bowl five, when four overs have already been bowled and the batsmen are facing 8-10 deliveries each, they are already ready. Wouldn’t it be better for India if Bumrah gave them a beer first and got them out?” he added.
Bumrah will stand firmly in the spotlight when he comes out with the new ball Jos Buttler, Phil Salt and Harry Brooke – three shots that can turn a game in a few shots.
Apart from Bumrah, Gavaskar also backed the young left-hander Tilak Varma As a crucial figure in the Indian middle order. The veteran appreciated Tilak’s cricketing intelligence and agility in the batting line-up.
“I’ve always thought of Tilak Varma as a very intelligent cricketer, someone who assesses the situation well and plays accordingly. Below No. 5 or No. 6, he really understands the timing.” Gavaskar noted.
Referring to Tilak’s last performance West Indiahe emphasized how the young man accepted and supported the pressure Sanju Samson at a crucial moment. Gavaskar noted that Tilak’s ability to bat in multiple positions – from 3 to 6 – gives India tactical flexibility, a valuable asset in knockout matches.
Fans are waiting for a contest at the Wankhede
With the semi-final set to take place at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, expectations are high. The venue is known for producing high-scoring thrillers and fans are gearing up for yet another outing.
The India-England rivalry in T20 cricket has produced some unforgettable moments and this clash carries the added weight of a World Cup semi-final. Social media is already buzzing around team lineups, power play strategies and mid-range matchups.
If Bumrah strikes early and Tilak anchors the middles, India can swing the balance in their favour. But nothing can be taken for granted against a fearless England side.
