Rafael Leão’s second-half equalizer salvaged a point for AC Milan in a 1-1 draw against a resilient Como side at Optus Stadium.
The Serie A clash, held in Perth, saw second-placed Milan unable to break down a determined Como, who sit comfortably in sixth. The draw prevents Milan from gaining ground at the top of the table. Como, for its part, showed its defensive strength and counterattack threat.
The first half started with a cautious attitude from both teams. Milan enjoyed more possession but struggled to create clear chances against Como’s organized defence. The match settled into a midfield battle.
Como found their lead in the 32nd minute. Nico Paz capitalized on a breakdown in the Milan defense, firing home to give the visitors a surprise lead. The goal silenced Milan’s traveling support in Perth.
Milan pressed for an immediate response, but Como goalkeeper Jean Butez was rarely troubled. The Rossoneri have struggled to convert their territorial advantage into genuine chances before the break. Como defended their score well.
At half-time, Milan manager Stefano Pioli had to inspire his team to find an equaliser. Como, under their coach, wanted to maintain their defensive form and perhaps extend their advantage on the counter-attack in the second half.
In the second period, Milan introduced Sasa Pavlovic on the restart, looking for more offensive momentum. The intensity of the game grew, with several yellow cards issued as both teams battled for control. Paz received a yellow card in the 53rd minute for Como.
Milan’s persistence finally paid off in the 64th minute. Rafael Leão, often Milan’s brightest spark, equalized. Ardon Jashari provided the assist, slipping a pass through the Como defense for Leão to finish.
Tempers flared soon after the goal. Leão and Como J. Ramon were shown yellow cards for unsportsmanlike conduct in the 68th minute. Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri was shown a red card in the 80th minute, adding to the drama.
Despite the man disadvantage for the coaching staff, Milan pushed for a winner. Como, however, held firm, thwarting late attempts as goalkeeper Jean Butez made crucial saves. The visitors defended bravely to preserve the draw.
The statistical analysis highlights the effectiveness of Como despite the lesser possession. Their Expected Goals (xG) of 1.45 was significantly higher than Milan’s 0.76, indicating better quality chances. Como registered 10 shots in total, with four on target, matching Milan’s four successful attempts of six total shots, while both goalkeepers made three saves.
This result sees AC Milan drop two crucial points in their quest for the Serie A title, finishing second in the league standings. Como continue their impressive campaign, consolidating their position in the top half of the table with a commendable away point.
