Nunez’s title Reign begins
“There are some big fights to look forward to.” Sugar ‘Nunez defends his title for the first time,’ says promoter Eddie Hearn Via Matchroom, talking about Sugar Nunez’s defense against Diaz.
Fans on social media consider this battle a decent first defense for Nunez (28-1, 27 COs) after recently winning the vacant IBF title of 130 pounds with a 12-round victory over Masanori Rikiishi on May 28, 2025 in Yokohama, Japan.
Nunez-Diaz Velelez is considered a first defense for ‘Sugar’ Nunez, and fans want to see that the promoter of match room Eddie Hearn will rise up against a better opponent, such as Raymond Ford.
On December 7, 2024, Diaz Velelez, 30, suffered a recent unanimous decision loss to Henry Lebron. In Diaz’s last fight, he defeated veteran Jose Antonio Meza (9-11, 2 COs) on April 18, 2025.
Earlier in Diaz’s career, he was considered a potential world champion by many supporters. He started with a record of 23-0 and looked impressive. However, Diaz was brought by the earth by Masayuki Itto in a 12-round Unanimou decision on July 28, 2018.
DÃaz’s career has not been the same since that defeat, as he was beaten by Shakur Stevenson, Emanuel Navarrete, Isaac Dogboe and Henry Lebron. The glamor is from Diaz’s career, and its low ranking with the WBC at 130 reflects this.
It is a little surprising that Hearn uses him as a challenger for ‘Sugar’ Nunez to counteract his defense, rather than a higher selected contender. The logic behind the move may be due to Diaz known for boxing fans who have been following the sport since 2018. Many of them will remember Diaz during his best years, and possibly see his battles against Shakur, Dogboe and Navarrete.
‘Sugar’ Nunez has won his last 18 battles since suffering his lonely career defeat
Hiram Gallardo on June 29, 2018. It was a unanimous six -round decision.
What is the next for nunez
