Welcome to Play Smarta regular GOLF.com game improvement column that will help you become a smarter and better golfer.
The easiest ways to score lower for most recreational players comes from fixing the basics—and the simplest. This means calling in your hand, ball position, intention, attitude, etc. These things may not be fun to work with, but having them in a stable location will do wonders for your game.
Purpose may be the most important of these fundamentals once you get to the course. If you’re not on target where you think you are, you’re putting yourself in a bad position before you swing the club.
If you’re anything like me, you’ve hit a terrible shot on the green only to find out that you were aiming right where you hit it. Sometimes, our brains will play tricks on us and make you feel like you’re aimed one way, when in reality you’re lined up in a completely different place.
If that sounds like you, check out the video below. It’ll teach you an easy aiming trick so you’ll never have to worry about where you’re aiming again.
Try this targeting trick
There are only two areas where you can place your ball before hitting a shot (assuming you’re playing it downhill): the green and the tee. When you’re on the green, you always line up the ball when you put it down, so why not do the same on the tee box?
When I go to hook my ball, I always point my logo or sharp line down my target line. It doesn’t have to be super accurate, but by having that line pointing down my target line, I can hold my stance with confidence knowing I’m aimed correctly.
If you want to line up your ball even more accurately, try choosing an intermediate target between your ball and the far target. I like to find a spot in the grass or divot and then use that as my intermediate target. With that point selected, I line up the ball pointing towards it.
When you’re having trouble with your aim, sometimes you’ll land the ball on target, only to realize that when you go up to the ball, it feels bad. That’s okay! As long as you orient the ball correctly when you place it, you can move knowing you’re on target.
