I don’t know any golfers who wouldn’t get more distance off the teewith many of us believing that the further we go on our drives, the better chance we have of scoring low.
In my experience, I’ve gained about 50 yards off the tee in the last 15 months just by figuring out where my body needs to be in the backswing and facing the shot. It’s not always perfect, but when I connect, the damn thing starts from my club page.
So what’s the key to generating the power you need to line it up properly and pull it off?
In the following video, GOLF Top 100 Teachers Jonathan Yarwood helps answer this question and offers some tips to help you understand swing movements to strengthen your shots so you can hit your driver farther. Now go ahead and amaze your gaming partners.
Try these tips to hit your driver farther
“>
Most amateur golfers struggle because they get out of the swing sequence, which is likely to lead to a high path – which produces those nasty slices we’ve all experienced more than we’d like to admit. .
Yarwood recognizes this and says one of the reasons for this is because many players swing the driver like they would an iron, using a steeper attack angle to compress the ball – but that’s not the point with the driver.
“The biggest killer in good swing is either going (the club) slant or going outside-to-inside the club path,” explains Yarwood. “That creates a downward angle of attack — and once you get that, you’re in trouble because he gets the low point in front of the ball.”
Yarwood says this including a side slope will be the first step in generating the proper angle of attack to hit your driver farther. To do this, drop the shoulder of the track and use more of the ground that passes through the ball.
“What happens with a driver is the side of the track and the shoulder of the track goes down as the lead hip goes up and back,” Yarwood says. “So if you think of walking down and bringing your hip up and back, you’ll start to get the idea.”
To help feel this movement, Yarwood says try holding the club in front of you and placing your left hand on top of its grip.
“Place your hand (left hand for right-handed players on top of the club grip) and move the side of the club up and down and your lead hip up and back,” he instructs. “You’re going to start getting what we call side spin, which causes the club to become shallow, the club path is more to the right, and the angle of attack will increase.”
Next, Yarwood says that simply sticking a stretch stick to the ground can be a good way to practice this movement.
“Place an extension stick behind the ball and in line with the target, placing it at a slight angle from the ground—just don’t place it too close to the ball,” he instructs. “Basically, swing down (the pitching stick) by taking a right side turn and bringing your left hip up and out of the shot.”
These changes take some getting used to, but once you’re able to incorporate them into your movement regularly, you’ll be able to power your drives for more distance.
“The road will be better, the plane will be better, and you won’t come out on top,” adds Yarwood. “So use some right side bend and lift your left thigh up.”
