Performance with a wedge is more important than you can understand. Should you go through a suitable wedge? Absolutely. But there is another part of the story that does not attract enough attention.
How often do I have to replace my wedges? Most importantly: What performance changes will I see while my wedges are old?
This item is specific to Wedges Vokey But it is applicable to any golf wedge.

Does what does the title suggest?
The long title suggestion is to replace your wedges after 65-75 rounds of golf. Some players players exceed this in a single calendar year.
The history of performance
While grooves inevitably lose their bite, how does performance change? Nothing will be better than fresh grooves and here this story begins.
To show performance changes, let’s start fresh with a the whole new wedge of golf.

Simulation of the dress in the grooves of a wedge
How many shots are required to simulate 75 rounds of dress in the grooves of a wedge? The title suggests that this be equated with 500 shots by a bunker.

I got a new title with 56 degrees Vokey SM10 and went to work. There are three stages of this process.
- Basic data collection from new title of Vokey SM10
- A second collection of data after 300 shots from a bunker. This simulates approximately 50 rounds.
- A final data collection after 500 shocks from a bunker, the roof of 75 rounds of simulation.
The performance change is stunning. To see the true performance change, the entire data collection was made by grass and hit in a 50 yard target. At 50 yards, you will see changes in the important metrics of the distance, trap and start angle.
Groove dress and consequences
A whole new wedge will produce peak performance. A 75 rounds of the dress will work, the kinda, but the consistency will be messy. Look at the data.

Keep
Having distance control is critical throughout your golf bag. Surely, this is most important with your wedges.
At first glance, you can see that the carriage distance yards are similar on average: 46, 51 and 48 yards, respectively. What you don’t see is the standard deviation. Standard deviations are a good representation of consistency. While this is just the first example, the lower the standard deviation, the better.
Standard deviation for the 75 rounds of clothing of clothing from the wedge from a whole new wedge. Runs from just under three to six. The difference in the distance of 75 rounds use is nearly 20 yards from a short to long result.

Spine
Spin is a critical ingredient in wedge performance. Rotation regression is significant as wearing wedge experiences. The new brand, it rolled on average at 7,021 rpm. Five hundred bunker shots later, 75 rounds of simulation later, and it rotates on average by 3,737 rpm.
Standard deviation paints an even more crazy look. Standard deviation for Backspin in a 50 yard stroke increases nearly threefold. Ranges from 574 rpm to 1,589. The results of the 75 rounds of the dress are extremely unpredictable.

The angle of the beginning
Why appreciate the beginning angle? At 50 yards, it is a main metric to place a wedge. You want the beginning angle to be approximately half of the wedge attic in hand.
With a whole new wedge, the average start angle was 27 degrees, a great starting point. As the coating grows, the beginning angle grows dramatically. The average start angle ranges from 27 degrees to 35 degrees. This is an eight -degree change at the start and we are not changing even the current loft in the wedge.

Outside with the old, with the new
If your wedge has excess clothing, it will not produce reliable shot results. The rotation will decrease and the beginning will increase. This will lead to unpredictable distance holding control.

Just let our own ”The best wedges of 2025“Where we include testing in wet conditions. The performance features of a wedge with considerable clothing are similar to wedge that do not perform well in wet conditions.
Two things happen: the rotation decreases and the beginning angle increases.
Wedges that do not handle wet conditions suffer well in general performance. They are unreliable.
If your wedges have excessive clothing, consider seriously to replace them. If you evaluate the performance, you will make the difference. Outside with the old, with new.
