Steve Smith denied David Warner a six with a stunning effort in the BBL


Sydney Sixers cricketer Steve Smith continued his impressive boundary-scoring streak with a remarkable effort during the BBL 2024-25 match against Sydney Thunder. Steve Smith makes an acrobatic save near the boundary line at the famous Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney on Friday, January 17.

Steve Smith leads the Sydney Sixers in the crucial Sydney Smash clash against the Sydney Thunder led by veteran opener David Warner. This match could shake up the top three in BBL 2024-25. But after just five overs at the Sydney Cricket Ground, play was called off due to heavy rain.

Sydney Sixers win the Bat Flip and dominate the Field

The Sydney Sixers won the toss to bat and chose to field Warner and new Australian Test star Sam Konstas for the Thunder. Jack Edwards started with a maiden but Warner hit a quick boundary before rain stopped play after 1.4 overs.

The match resumed under revised conditions of 19 overs per side. He managed to hit 9 off 14 balls, including two fours, before being dismissed by Constas Edwards.

The incident happened on the first ball of the 5th innings when David Warner tried to disturb the bowler Todd Murphy. Warner stepped outside and lofted the ball towards long off. Steve Smith produced an amazing effort to save the six.

Smith threw the ball back downfield before going outside and returning to complete the catch. With no one around to help, the former Australian captain saved four runs for his team with a remarkable fielding effort.

Big Bash League’s official account X shared a clip of Smith’s tossing attempt on social media (formerly known as Twitter) with the caption, “This is elite from @stevesmith49 👏. What a way to save a six! #BBL14.”

Steve Smith has been the standout Test star in Australia’s T20 competition this season. He started strongly with a remarkable century against the Scorchers in his first match, followed by a 50 in his second outing, leading to victory over the Strikers.

Sydney Thunder won by 36 runs from 5.1 overs after being bowled by the Sydney Sixers at the SCG. David Warner chipped in with 22 runs and Hugh Weibgen with 1 run.
