You might have guessed that we had seen the last of the new putters this week. Fortunately, this is not the case. As the lights dim on the annual PGA Show in Orlando, attention shifts to the new LAB Golf DF3i decides.
The release may be at the end of this important week, but it’s still front and center in terms of importance.

When LAB Golf released the DF3 in early 2024, it was a really big deal. For years, golfers have been asking LAB to make a smaller version of their Husky Directed Force model. of LAB DF2.1 it had all of LAB Golf’s amazing Lie Angle Balance technology, but its large size prevented some golfers from putting one in their bag.
Then it came DF3. It had all the LAB Golf technology, but in a much smaller size. of DF3 quickly became one of LAB Golf’s most popular models with touring pros and amateurs alike. Rickie Fowler put one in play as did Phil Mickelson.

The crowning achievement for DF3 it came last year when JJ Spaun sank a 64-foot bomb on the final hole to win the US Open.
While LAB Golf has always valued performance over looks, they hit the sweet spot between the two DF3. of DF3 it was the model that made “ugly” players acceptable, motivating many golfers to be more open to finding out what LAB Golf was all about.

These days, you’ll see a lot of LAB Golfers on the PGA Tour and on your course. WHEREAS DEVICE AND OZ models have a respectable presence, most of the devices are DF3.
That’s why LAB Golf releases this new one DF3i version is so significant.
The “i” in DF3i is for “insert”

As with the OZ.1i, the DF3i has a stainless steel face insert. This milled insert changes its feel and performance. The new milled stainless steel insert feels stronger than the milled aluminum face of the original DF3 model.

The stronger-than-aluminum stainless steel also adds a bit more flair to its face DF3i. This material change should result in your balls releasing more than with the original DF3.

For more traditional shooting heads, you can increase the velocity of the shot by lowering the loft of the face. The problem with this is that you also change the way the ball is released from the face. Depending on the pitch conditions, less loft can end up slowing the ball down.
(Fluffy greens + low loft = excessive grass drag)
The beauty of DF3i insert is that it allows you to add a little speed without changing the specs of the thrower.
Gear up for any putter, but especially for a LAB golf putter

By the way, don’t blindly buy any LAB golf equipment off the shelf. Lie angle balance really only works when the putter’s lie angle matches the player’s desired lie angle. These two alignment angles must match so that all the weights on the bottom of the thrower can function properly.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t buy a used LAB meter. Far from it. I’m just saying that you should buy a gauge, used or new, that matches your specifications.

Send LAB a video of your swing with your current putter and they can tell you what your lie angle should be. Passing through LAB Golf Remote Video Device as well as a personal assembly at the LAB center, I can attest to the accuracy of the video assembly.
Will the DF3i’s stainless steel face bring a smile?

This new face allows you to add “face composition” to your putter fit recipe. With customized loft, length and lie, each golfer will have a specific face that works best for them.
If your current DF3 is providing the distances you need, you probably don’t need the stainless steel face. As someone who tends to get lost online, but short, I’m really excited for a little more pop. This extra stability and spin can turn my short mistakes into marks.

The head-to-head battle between this new DF3i and my DF3 player have started. Early spins indicate that DF3 could be in trouble.
By the way, LAB did a great job of hiding the insert in the address. Unlike the OZ.1i where you can see the stainless steel face, it’s completely hidden when you look down DF3i.
I’ve wrapped a staggering amount of paws this publishing season. More than one of them has threatened my DF3 bag position, but DF3i is the most serious contender.

If the new DF3i performs like my DF3 but has extra, repeatable pop, my beloved purple DF3 might get dusty in the garage this season. If that happens, keep an eye out for an article about the new LAB Golf Custom DF3i interface very soon. (Remember that purple is now a standard custom color.)
