Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor reveals Sam Kerr is in a “very good place” as he continues to recover from his ACL injury.
The striker suffered a devastating knee problem in January 2024 during a Chelsea training camp in Morocco and has not returned to the pitch since.
The incident saw her miss the second half of the 2023/24 season, with Chelsea claiming a fifth successive WSL title and the Olympics with Australia.
The 31-year-old has continued to insist she does not want to rush her return to football, but reports emerged this week that interim Australia coach Tom Sermanni wants her to join the rest of the games before of the upcoming friendlies in Europe against Switzerland and Germany.
Speaking to the media ahead of Chelsea’s UEFA Women’s Champions League clash against FC Twente, Bompastor wondered if the club would let Kerr go.
“We always have a close relationship with each national team coach, communication is very important,” said Bompastor.
“We just have to be on the same page. If we think this is best for the player, I’m happy to help you. That’s a conversation we’re having. If it has to go, it’s going to go, but I think that at the moment, this is not the decision we are making”.
The forward had scored nine goals in 12 games last season before being hit by injury, cementing her place as a key part of Chelsea’s squad.
Bompastor confirmed she is willing to sit down with the striker and the Chelsea squad to begin a return-to-play plan.
“Sam is doing well and is in a good place mentally. We see her every day even if she doesn’t take part in training,” explained the boss.
“During the international break we have a meeting with the squad to make our own plan and see when she can start practicing individually with the technique, which will be a new step for her.
“He brings so much positivity to the team, even when he’s not training.”
