Alison Lee rocks. The ball lands on the green. The ball spins back. The ball falls into the hole.
The crowd goes wild. Caddies go wilder.
What happened in the world?
After Lee, making her first appearance in Solheim Cup IN nine years for Team USAkept her approach shot on the second hole of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club from 86 yards, the bodies of her and partner Megan Khang. they tore their shirts in the frenzy that followed.
You have to see this to believe it.
The Eagles gave Lee and Khang an early 1 Up lead in their Saturday afternoon four-ball match against Team Europe’s Swedish duo of Anna Nordqvist and Madelen Sagstrom. But, perhaps most improbably, the celebration of their corpses was choreographed only moments before.
According to Golf Channel’s Kay Cockerill, Khang’s caddy, Jack Fulghum, made a bet on the second tee. The best part was that if any of the American players went out during the match, the corpses would pay $500.
Cockerill reported that Lee immediately hit back.
“No, if we open, you guys (youngsters) take your shirts off,” Lee said.
Just minutes later, Lee’s wedge landed in the cup and her caddy Taylor “Shota” Takada and Fulghum had to pay.
At first, Takada runs to Lee, yelling before Khang joins the party. Takada continues to run for a moment before disappearing from the NBC camera shot.
Just then Fulghum walks by, Khang’s bag in one hand, his shirt and tail in the other with the kind of sheepish grin you only get when you lose a bet in the most exciting way possible.
By the time Takada comes back to bat, his shirt is gone as he goes for a hug with Fulghum. Khang burst out laughing.
“Wait a minute,” said NBC broadcaster Terry Gannon, surprised but also amused by the moment. “Stop there. That’s enough.”
It was later that Cockerill came to share the story of the party.
“Low and behold, five minutes later, they’re on the road doing just that,” Cockerill said. “They couldn’t believe they proposed this and it all happened in the same hole.”
And as NBC’s Tom Abbott pointed out, Lee’s version of the bet saved them each $500, too!
Team USA will look to maintain this energy level the rest of Saturday’s games. The Americans entered the fourth of five sessions leading the Europeans by 8 points to 4 as they aim to regain the Solheim Cup for the first time since 2017.
