AO champion defense, Sinner, goes through a series of better career wins of 20 games in Sunday’s final against Alexander Zverev, who led Gjokovic 7-6 (5), then the Serbian superstar retired with a torn muscle.
Playing for his third consecutive major in the difficult field, Sinner said Gjokovic’s retirement makes it very clear: he has big problems.
“I was warming up. I didn’t see it directly,” Sinner told Gjokovic’s retirement. “I saw how it happened. It is very unfortunate to see such things, especially in the Grand Slams semifinals.
“But if Novak retires, it means he has big problems. He has won here in the past with some physical problems and has always tried to do the best. He has given much so far in his career for the sport.
“It is unfortunate to see. I wish him a speedy recovery.”
