Anthony Joshua’s longtime rehabilitation coach, Sina “Evolve” Ghami, died in a road accident in Ogun State, Nigeria on Monday, December 29.
The accident happened in Makun on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Two people died. Authorities did not provide further details about the vehicles involved.
One of those killed was Sina Ghami, who worked with Anthony Joshua for more than a decade. Ghami was part of Joshua’s team for much of his professional career. His work focused on rehabilitation and physical management between training camps and combat.
The other person killed was Joshua’s personal trainer, Kevin Ayodele, also known as Kevin “Latif” Ayodele, or “Latz”.
Ghami and Joshua have known each other since childhood. Ghami remained involved as Joshua’s career continued. He remained part of the team through different stages, including title runs.
Ghami was present for a number of Joshua’s big fights. He was in Joshua’s corner for the 2017 heavyweight title fight against Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley Stadium.
Apart from boxing, Ghami has also worked with athletes in other sports. He spent time with the Michigan State Spartans. He has also worked with athletes linked to the NBA, NFL and MLB.
In 2017, Ghami co-founded Evolve Gym. The gym focused on rehabilitation and performance work.
Authorities said Joshua suffered minor injuries and was taken to a medical facility for evaluation. Further updates were not immediately available.
