Sheffield Wednesday have been handed an additional six-point deduction by the English Football League following multiple breaches of financial regulations. The last punishment leaves the team 27 points away from safety of the Championship.
Former chairman Dejphon Chansiri has also been banned from owning or managing any EFL team for three years. According to BBC Radio Sheffield, the new penalty relates to the players’ unpaid wages for March, May and June, as well as other missed payments to staff and HMRC.
The club had already received 12 points in October following their decision to enter administration. With the new ruling, Wednesday are now minus 10 points, placing them well behind 21st-placed Swansea.
While investigations into the current campaign are ongoing, league officials have said they do not intend to impose further point deductions at this stage.
The statement from the League explains the current situation
A statement published on the club’s website confirmed the immediate deduction of six points and Chansiri’s three-year ban. He also noted that matters reviewed by the Club’s independent Financial Reporting Unit remain ongoing for incidents prior to administration.
The EFL added that it is not pushing for additional sporting sanctions as part of these inquiries. Discussions between the league and the club also continue over the current fee cap, which currently runs until the end of the 2027 winter window.
That issue is expected to be resolved when his exit from the administration is finalized on Wednesday. Since the administration of the club began, Chansiri’s nearly decade-long tenure has come to an end.
Potential ownership and future reset
The administrators are continuing efforts to select a preferred buyer for the club and had previously targeted Friday as the day to identify one. At least one potential bidder is understood to have toured Hillsborough, with interest reported from parties willing to bid above the “25p in the pound” mark needed to avoid further penalties.
Supporters received encouraging news – the next league campaign will start on Wednesday returning to zero points, giving the future owners a clean sheet. Also, contrary to previous indications, the rate cap will now end in January instead of 2027.
This change gives any owner the freedom to immediately prepare a recruitment strategy for next summer, vital to the planned rebuild in League One. After a turbulent chapter, today’s developments offer some optimism for fans hoping for stability and revival.
