Roach (25-1-3, 10 KOs) has built his reputation on timing and shot selection at close range. His approach bears similarities to Stevenson’s defensive style, although Roach is more willing to trade when opponents step forward. Power has never been a big part of his game, allowing several recent fights to turn into close, grinding contests.
Some fans question why Roach is still being given world title fight opportunities after coming up short in his last two fights with a pair of draws. They openly wonder how many chances he will be given before the sanctioning bodies choose to allow other, arguably more deserving fighters to be given opportunities.
Those tough fights include 12-round draws against Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz and Gervonta “Tank” Davis. The Cruz fight sparked debate among fans after Roach was dropped and absorbed heavy pressure for long stretches. The Davis fight also progressed far and required Roach to withstand sustained offense.
Zepeda (33-1, 27 KOs), ranked No. 1 by the WBC at lightweight, enters the scheduled bout after the first loss of his career. The Mexican pressure fighter dropped a decision to Stevenson last July in a bout that many observers saw as closer than the wide scorecards suggested. Zepeda spent much of the fight attacking the body, though that work had little effect on the official score.
The WBC recently ordered Zepeda and Roach, ranked #2, to fight for the vacant WBC lightweight title. The belt became available after Shakur moved up in weight to challenge WBO light welterweight champion Teofimo on January 31, 2026.
Interim titleholder Jadier Herrera was not included among the fighters selected to compete for the vacant belt. That decision surprised some fans who expected the interim champion to take priority in the title picture.
Negotiations between Zepeda and Roach have yet to be concluded. If the two sides reach terms, the fight is expected to take place during the summer of 2026.
Stevenson has already shared the ring with Zepeda. His early selection suggests he believes Roach’s close-range tackle can give the Mexican pressure fighter problems. Whether Roach can maintain that accuracy against Zepeda’s constant pressure will likely determine the outcome.
