Shakur Stevenson slammed Gervonta Davis in an interview, pointing out that he used weights on his opponents and faced “less talented fighters” to make himself look better than he is.
WBC lightweight champion Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) became upset when told that Gervonta was not impressed with his record and asked what he had done in his career to want to fight him. Tank shut down any possibility of a fight against Shakur and considered him unworthy to meet the King. That’s true. Shakur is completely unfit to be in his presence.
It is Shakur’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, who discussed the idea of him fighting Tank Davis in 2025. Hearn mapped out 2025 for the Newark, New Jersey native, talking about him fighting these three:
- Floyd Schofield
- William Zepeda
- Gervonta Davis
Now Shakur is even talking like a fight with Tank Davis is a foregone conclusion, without saying anything. Tank is like, ‘What is this guy talking about?’ Shakur is like a spoiled child, used to getting what he wants, and snapping when he tells someone no.
Stevenson needs to give Edwin De Los Santos a rematch, prove he can fight without running, and then Andy Cruz. The Cuban talent is a better version of Shakur, but with offense, power and a willingness to get involved. If Cruz were a computer, he’d be the next generation above Shakur, a clumsy, outdated, early 2000-level model, freezing on pages.
Accusations of draining weight
“He just doesn’t look like a real one. No disrespect to him, but I’m a real person. I’m not going to go out there and act like Tank’s not a good fighter,” Shakur Stevenson said. Boxing Newsand responding to the fact that Gervonta Davis said he was not impressed with his record, and he shut down rumors of the two meeting in the ring because he saw no value in the fight with Shakur.
“Just like he’s asking what I’ve done for the sport of boxing, I think he should look in the mirror and ask the same question, because it’s like what you’ve done?” continued Shakur about Tank Davis. “Even the guys you knocked out were all on a weight clause, a weight drain. It looks good to the public and the people who don’t know, but I’m a fighter. I know what’s going on. I know what you do.
“You take the less talented fighters and put them in the ring with you and make them look like they’re on his level, but they’re not. Until he fights an elite-level fighter, I don’t want to hear anything from him,” Shakur said.
What Gervonta says is 100% true. Who did Shakur fight in his career? No one good. He beat some washed-up fighters at 130, won three paper titles against poor opposition, and looked bad as hell since moving up to 135. He was booed out of the arena in his fight against Edwin De Los Santos, and fans fled. rode in his last fight against the weak-hitting Artem Harutyunyan last July in his hometown of Newark.
“Fight someone I fought!”
“He (Tank) acted like he couldn’t get many people in the ring. Why didn’t he try to get Edwin De Los Santos? Why wouldn’t this be a fight you want? Since you want to talk bad about me, fight someone I fought with. And you talked about my performance doing that. So, out perform me,” Shakur said.
Tank fighting Edwin De Los Santos will do nothing for him and his career because that guy hasn’t fought in 14 months. He would have lost to Stevenson, and by the time Gervonta fought him in August or September, he would have been inactive for 21 months.
Shakur’s stock has dropped since he was exposed as a chicken runner by De Los Santos on November 16, 2023. He did nothing to turn things around by fighting a rematch with him or looking brave in his next fight against the light punching Arten Harutyunyan.
