The United States had not set up Espirito Santo trophy in Championship of the World Women’s Amateur Team Since 2018, and they had to rely on a strange tiebreaker to catch that belt on Saturday in Singapore.
When the dust settled on Sunday in Tanah Merah Country Club, the United States, Spain and the Republic of Korea were all tied to the Presidency on 18 under. Despite the connection, there is not a sudden death play of death or special match connector. On the contrary, in the championship of the amateur team of amateur women, it is the thing that does not normally count that proves to be the difference.
When the results with 72 holes are equal, Tiebreker is the lowest non-incoming result.
In this case, that card belonged Stanford Megha Ganne starwho shot an equal 72 in the third round. It was a Tiebreaker that Team USA was prepared to rely, if necessary, when the week began.
“We’re beyond happy. We don’t have to do this often, to play for the country, so we were just excited we were here,” said Ganne, who won the USA’s amateur championship in August. “We were so amazed at the Golf level from Korea and Spain. It is a heartbroken connector for them, but we knew the third result yesterday and today could matter.”
“We talked about this as a team that could potentially come down to the third result,” said Farah O’keefe, a young Texas. “And so I think we were all prepared throughout the week that everyone counted and when the last drop collapsed, so it happened, then a third result was calculated. And so the fact that we were prepared was great.”
The first tiebreaker is the lowest not counting score for the last round, but when Catherine Park, an elderly in USC, made a bird in the 18th hole to match Carolina Lopez-Chacarra with a 71, Tiebreaker moved to the lowest not calculation from the third round, which went to Ganne.
“With the origin of my rules, I was very aware of the element of the connection,” said American captain Kendra Graham, who worked in rules and races for USA. “The first phone call I had with each of them, I told them that every single player was on it every single day … If you ever come to a tiebreaker, we will go to that result.”
The Americans tracked Korea from three shots entering the last round, but they knew that the deficit could be hidden quickly.
“We all knew that three shots were nothing,” Ganne said. “That’s just this is a hole if we all do it, so we just tried to play absolutely the best golf we could, each of us.”
They did it exactly.
Ganne led the squad on Sunday without Bogey, while O’Kefe and Park both shot 71 to connect the game, with the eight -legged park park by connecting it and handing over the US trophy through Tiebreaker.
“I’m just very happy,” Park said. “The pressure of making that eight legs and then know we won was incredible. It was a dream being here with them, winning this trophy.”
