There may have been routine wins for London Heathside’s Seifu Jamaal and Herts Phoenix’s Annabelle Gummow in times of 50:12 and 55:27 respectively, but slightly further down there was a W55 British age group best for Karima Harris in 59:49.
Both overall winners took significant wins in the two and three minute range, but Harris beat the previous W55 age group best set by Lucy Elliott two years ago by 27 seconds as the first age mark of the year fell.
Harris raced home third-placed Kate Rennie, the 2024 British and Irish Masters International W50 champion, whose 59:42 jumps her into third on the all-time W50 list.
“It’s a tough race and quite hilly so I struggled but I was absolutely delighted with the result,” Harris said.
More followed as Linda Hembery, second on the all-time W65 list, ran 72:52 after taking more than a minute to cross the start line.

BRASS MONKEY HALF MARATHON, York, January 19
Northeast Regionals bronze medalist Lawrence McCourt took more than a minute off his 2023 best when he won the event in 65:27.
This was surpassed by Freddie Roden Jr., who, despite losing a minute, also improved on his previous mark of 66:26, followed by Dan Garbutt and Mohamed Abshir.
Heather Townsend, who ran 2:37:00 at the Valencia Marathon in December, topped the women’s division by a minute in 74:15, followed by junior Charlotte Dillon in 75:14 in her first outing at the distance.
