This day in the field of athletics – September 22
1888– George Gray defined 1St 8 of his previous IAAF world records in the shot put with a winning throw of 43-10 ¾ (13.38) at the NYAC Fall Games in Traverse Island, New York.
Wilson Cowdon set his 4th (and final) American record 117-9 1/2 (35.90) ​​hammer throw at New City. “Maryland’s Strongest Man” was a two-time US champion in hammer (1883,1886) and 56-pound weight class.
1956— Bud Held set the last of his six American records in the javelin with a throw of 270-0 (82.30) in Pasadena, California.

1960–Erlen Brown set his 7th (and last) American record in the shot put, clearing 54-9 (16.69) in Frankfurt, Germany. Brown had earlier won the bronze medal at the Rome Olympics.

1968— East Germany’s Margitta Gummel set a world record 61-11 (18.87) in the women’s shot put at the pre-Olympic meet in Frankfurt. He would take the record to another level the following month with throws of 62-6 ¾ (19.07) and 64-4 (19.61) to win the gold medal at the Mexico City Olympics.

1983— China’s Jianghua Zhu improved her world record in the high jump to 7-9 ¼ (2.37) 7-9 ¾ (2.38) in Shanghai.

1985— East German athletes set 3 world records today in East Berlin.
Ulf Timmermann The throw of 74-2 ½ (22.62) eclipsed the world record of 72-10 ¾ (22.22) set in 1985 by East German Udo Beyer, who finished 2nd.th here with a throw of 71-9 ½ (21.88).
Sabina Bush won the women’s 400-meter hurdles in 53.55, breaking the world record of 53.58 set by the Soviet Union’s Margarita Ponomareva in 1984.
Using a legal 2.0mpps wind tracking speed, Heike Drechsler Won the women’s long jump with a leap of 24-5 (7.44). The previous mark of 24-4 ½ (7.43) was set by AniÈ™oara Cushmir of Romania in 1983.

1990— Great Britain’s Peter Elliott won the Mercedes 5 men’s divisionth For mile 3 of the avenueth cold and rainy New York day for the past 4 years. Her time of 3:47.83 was just shy of Sydney Marie’s course record of 3:47.52.
In the women’s race, Patty Sue Plummer won in 4:16.68 to surpass the CR (4:19.48) set by Romania’s Maritza Puica in 1986. Runner-up Natalya Artyomova (RUS) was also off the previous record with a time of 4:17.49.
Plummer, who had predicted Switzerland’s Sandra Gasser to win, was chuffed to be proven wrong. “I can’t believe I did it,” he said moments after crossing the finish line. (Glaser finished 4th-4:20.61).
Fred Lebow, president of the New York Road Runners Club, attributes the fast times to the fresh pavement on the 82d-to-62d Street course, a new recycled glass product.

2000— Polish Robert Korzeniowski (1:18:59/Olympic record) won. Men’s 20 kilometer walk on 1St competition day at the Sydney Olympics. Mexico’s Noah Hernandez (1:19:03) and Russia’s Vladimir Andreev (1:19:27) won silver and bronze. 4:th the defending champion was Jefferson Perez from Ecuador (1:20:18).
Korzeniowski, the 1996 gold medalist in the 50k, would go on to win that event later in Sydney and for the 3rd time.thtime: 2004
Mexico’s Bernardo Segura thought he had won the gold medal just before overtaking Korzeniowski as they re-entered the stadium for the finish. However, he had already been disqualified by the officials for numerous violations. It wasn’t until Segura received a congratulatory phone call from Mexico’s president that he learned of his suspension. An appeal by Mexican officials was denied.
Finnish representative Arsi Haryu won Men’s shooting with his 2th– shot put 69-10 ¼ (21.29). The following 3 places were taken by the American trio: Adam Nelson (69-7 (21.21)), John Godina (69-6 ¾ (21.20)) and Andy Bloom (68-5 ¾ (20.87)).
