Golf rules are complicated! Thankfully, we have guru. our Guy rules know the front book to get back. Do you have a question? He has all the answers.
A friend and I arrived in a box with a marker only with a marker. We played where we thought it was reasonable, thinking at the location of the other marker. Was it okay? —Warren Ayala, Hymn, Ariz.
In the game of the match, you and your opponent (or friend or French) may agree on how to set the matter.
In the shock game, where the difference becomes more important, contact the committee. Can’t be reached? For rule 6.2b (4), use reasonable judgment to try to play from two rectangles with club length based on the front and outer edges of the tee marker. Smart committees will mark the positions of the spray paint markers for this eventuality.

In a recent competition of the match, my opponent addressed his ball and began his swing. The middle of the swing, his ball rolled forward, and he rose to hit the ball in motion. (The hit even found the right path.) I know the rules penalize a player who hits a ball in motion. What is the story here? I hope you say the penalty with two strokes or losses of the hole. – Erik Morrison, via email
Not exactly the spirit of generosity, Erik, but at least you are honest.
The general principle in Golf, as set forth in regulation 10.1 (D), is that you have to play the ball at rest and you can’t make a shot in a moving ball, so as not to really make the general penalty of two shocks in the game and loss of holes in the game.
Anyway-and this is where your frustration will start-there is an engraving where, if the ball begins to move on the return of a person, and you hit the ball while moving, there is no penalty.
This is true as it is specifically associated with a ball that falls from a tee, for rule 6.2 (b)/5 – yes, the rules contemplate almost everything – and anywhere else, as a rule 9.1 (b). In these scenarios, the blow counts and you play the next shoot from where it stands.
