Seb Coe is running for IOC president



The world athletics president is up against six rivals when it comes to replacing International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach in March.

Sebastian Coe says he is “thrilled and honoured” to be nominated as IOC President in 2025.

With Thomas Bach stepping down, Coe is one of seven candidates.

Coe said: “I am excited and honored to share with you that I will be running for the presidency of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), as the IOC recently announced.

“Olympic sports are fundamental to my DNA. I have had the privilege of being a two-time Olympic champion, I have chaired the Olympic and Paralympic Games (London 2012) from bid, delivery and legacy investment, I have chaired the National Olympic Committee, BOA and led. International Federation through some tumultuous times, maintaining athletics’ position as a cornerstone of the Olympic Games.

“Sport plays an important role in maintaining and maintaining the health of people, young and old, in every country of the world. But it faces significant challenges on multiple fronts.

“During the Covid years, many people struggled due to inactivity and many sports organizations suffered due to lack of funds. We need to invest more in both in the next decade.

“The priority for the IOC should be laser-like focus on sport. I believe I can help achieve this and more.

“In the coming weeks I will publish a detailed manifesto so that voting members can understand what I stand for and what I believe.”

Other candidates include: David Lapparient, chairman of cycling’s governing body; Morinari Watanabe, head of the gymnastics governing body; Johan Elias, President of the International Skiing and Snowboarding Federation; Kirsty Coventry, IOC Executive Board member and former swimmer from Zimbabwe; Prince Faisal Al Hussein of Jordan; and Spanish Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr., whose father was the president of the IOC for 21 years.

Only IOC members may be nominated as candidates by vote of the remaining members 111 memberships Olympic body.
