Nothing cures the pain of an open American beat in Oakmont like TPC River Highlands.
This week TravelerHeld at the PAR-70 course in Cromwell, Conn., Continuously produces some of the lowest results 18- and 72-rays of the season, and the round of Thursday’s opening was no different.
Scottie Scheffler and Austin Eckroat both shot with an eight under 62 years old to grab the first round superiority at the end of the season. Wyndham clarkRory Mcilroy and Keegan Bradley all added 64s.
Eckroat was heated towards the end of his round, going-Birdie-Birdie-Birdie at no. 13-15 and ending with a bird at 18.
Scheffler, World Nr. 1, seemed to be forced to beat that number – and at one point 59 time was in the game – but Scheffler slowed down.
After shooting a 30-year-old in the front, he went Birdie-Eagle-Para-Birdie at no. 12-15 and had to play the last three holes in two to shoot in the 1950s, but he filed two of them and Bogeyed 17.
On the 17th, Scheffler lost the right path and then saw his access to the back in the green back. He settled from the fringe, but left himself 15 meters for the first, which he lost on the right side. It was his only noise of the day.
“I got hot very early in the round and left for a beautiful start, and then really kept the momentum through the 15 hole and then had a mess there at 17,” said Scheffler, “but it was generally a pretty good day.”
Despite putting a 62 on the manager’s chart -and improving his chances at -140 to win -Scheffler called it difficult conditions, mainly due to the high winds that sometimes gusts.
“The conditions were really challenging there today,” he said. “I would be surprised to see what the results were about the type of (late) wave of time, just because when I came out to eat this morning, it was very quiet. When I came out to do my warmth, it was still quiet. With the time I arrived at the first tee, it was blowing 20 miles per hour, and it was more stable.
“Maybe it went down to 10, 12 and then it would deal with 30 years old. It was very challenging there. I really didn’t let my mind wander too. I just tried to stay there and execute, and that was very good.”
Although not every big name player went low. Ludwig Aberg, Adam Scott and Robert Macintyre, fresh at his US Open race completion, everyone failed to break. Xander Schauffle was just one under, which puts it in a tie for the 36th.
Very easy in TPC River Highlands? Scheffler would like to tell you toward him Comments from Wednesday. Last year, 22 under 72 holes was good enough to enter a play off on this tour (eventually won from Scheffler). He was asked if this course was very easy, especially for a signature event.
“Sometimes, especially on this day and age, people get a lot of the winning outcome being what is a proper test. I think a proper test is good shots that are rewarded and bad shots to be punished. I think this is one of the best golf courses for it,” he said. “There are possibilities there, and there is also punishment. You see the closing extension; 15, if you hit a good blow, you have a bird’s option. If you try to get rid of well, you will be on a short green right green and have a 40-Oborre bunker, a hard stroke.
“Sixteen, if you hit a good blow, you will have a good look at the birds. If you release on bail and go long, it’s a harsh chip below the hill. Seventeen, you hit the fairway, you have a chance to hit there near the pin. If you hit it on the left, you probably can’t get in green.
And on Thursday, Scheffler hit many good shots. They were rewarded. He is your co-leader who goes Friday.
