Scott McTominay says he has no regrets about leaving Manchester United join in Napoli in the summer and is unaware of the fans’ negative reaction to his departure.
The Scotland international joined the 2022/23 Serie A winners in a deal worth £25.7m in August, ending a 22-year association with United.
McTominay had been an integral part of the Red Devils squad for the previous seven seasons, making more than 250 appearances in all competitions after being integrated into the first-team set-up by Jose Mourinho.
Although McTominay’s performances in united were criticized from time to time, there was slight bewilderment among supporters that the club – looking to freshen things up under then manager Erik ten Hag – would allow a hard-working player, often called upon to play in the biggest games and a graduate of the club’s academy, to leave.
But under pressure to balance the books and fund other signings, United sanctioned the sale of McTominay to Napoli – a move he says he doesn’t regret making at all.
“Obviously it’s a big decision, there’s no denying it,” McTominay said of his departure. “It was a huge decision for me, my family and my friends. At times like this in your life you just have to say, ‘Do I want to do this?’ Absolutely’, and go for it. There is no looking back.
“I’ve never had any regrets in my life or my career and I still do to this day. I want my career to be successful and I’ll do everything I can to try and push myself to be the best football player and the best person I can be.” i can be”.
One of United’s main weaknesses had been the ease with which opposition teams could cut through midfield, although McTominay’s energy, tenacity, all-round commitment and penchant for scoring big goals endeared him to many followers.
Indeed, Casemiro was the player in the spotlight for many United fans following a dip in their performance levels, not McTominay. The Scot, however, revealed that he has not paid attention to the reaction to his departure since arriving in Italy.
“I don’t read the newspapers or social media,” he said. “That’s something I stay away from. There’s no reason to dwell on it. The past is the past. I’m enjoying my football and I just want to do everything in my power to push my team higher up the table and also do my best for my coach in Italy.”
Opening up to her new life under Antonio Conteadded: “Football is never always going to be sunshine and rainbows, you know. You’ve got to ride the waves and not get too excited and just keep a steady balance of where we really want to go as a group.
“The manager and the coaching staff are firmly in who we trust and who we want to push us in the right direction going forward. All the ideas they’ve given us are brilliant, what we’re doing in training is great too a marathon before the wins start coming.”
