Sarah Schmelzel had a annoying, disappointing, exciting Sunday Sunday last Sunday last year. The good news is her American team beat Europe 15.5-12.5 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, VA., But the hours before that? A malfunction of the wardrobe that “came in a very bad time,” Schmelzel said.
The 30-year-old Pro explained the complicated situation in this week’s episode of Podcast Subpar of Golf.
“Let me foretell this by saying I was so adult,” Schmelzel said. “I had so much adrenaline, like never more adrenaline running through my body. My heights were so high this day.”
Facing Madelene Sagstrom in her Sunday Singles match, Schmelzel was 2 down early, won two holes to tie her and then lost her 8th. She was already upset about the loss of the hole, but then she made a quick break in the bathroom and things worsened – the chain on its edge, which was on the back, broken.
Running late in Tee and now shocked for the edge, she lost her 9th hole.
“And I’m being fuming, right?” Schmelzel said in Podcast. “I’m like, f – the skirt. I lost the hole, so I’m again 2 down. I get up from the green and I’m telling Pat (Hurst) and I’m like, this skirt F- – is broken. Can we get another skirt here?” (Laughter))
Schmelzel threw her rain pants, “and is 150 degrees out,” she said. (Technically, it was 87 degrees, but that’s still hot.)
Eventually someone brought Schmelzel a pair of pants, but that wouldn’t make it cooler, so she refused. She won the 10th hole, and at 11 a skirt finally arrived – though now she did not accept it.
“I’m like. I don’t want the skirt F- -; I’m playing now!” She said. (Laughter) “So I flag it to another, we tie that hole, I win it with an eagle in the hole after that, and finally lose another and I’m like, give me the edge. The rain pants are like climbing my body.
Sagstrom won the match 1 up, but Schmelzel still had a strong debut by Solheim Cup, ending with a 2-2 and two points of record.
