Rohit missed the opening Test series against Australia due to the birth of her second child. This forced KL Rahul to open the batting along with Yashasvi Jaiswal. For me this is a clear indicator – Sanjay Manjrekar
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Sanjay Manjrekar said that it is clear that Rohit Sharma will not open in the second Test. He said the team would stick to the successful opening partnership of KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who performed well in the second innings of the first Test.
“Yes, to me, that’s a clear indicator. I thought maybe a few other things why they would do that. But it’s clear to me that we all think and care. Such an important contribution from the successful opening pair we got in the second innings of the last match given that, yes, it’s a very clear indicator,” Manjrekar said.
Rohit Sharma batted in the middle order against the Australian Prime Minister’s XI in the Warm-up match
Rahul and Jaiswal added a modest five-run stand in the first innings. However, they added India’s first opening partnership of 200 in Australia during the second innings. Their 201-run stand helped Team India set Australia a tough target of 534. India secured a dominant victory by 295 runs.
Rohit Sharma and Jaiswal have been a strong opening pair in recent Tests, but Rahul’s impressive performance at the top has created a dilemma for India ahead of the second Test.
Team Management Reflects on Cricket Logic and Current Form – Sanjay Manjrekar
Sanjay Manjrekar said that the team management will go with common sense and current form while selecting the opening pair for the upcoming match. Manjrekar added that the team management will stick with the Rahul-Jaiswal pair after their 200-plus partnership in the last match.
“Imagine a 200-plus partnership for the opening wicket in Australia for the first time and we have seen the result. So I doubt this team management is thinking about the logic of cricket and the current form. They will use common sense and in the current reality, Rohit himself can volunteer , is the right move to make the most of what you’ve earned,” said Majrekar.
