Newlands is one of the very few areas in South Africa that offers assistance to spinners. But things were very different in the last Test at this venue. The game was played between South Africa and India in January last year.
In the first innings, South Africa were bowled out for just 55 runs, while India scored 153. South Africa scored 176 in the second innings and India chased down the target of 79 runs with the loss of three wickets. The Pacers thoroughly dominated the proceedings. No spinner had bowled alone in this game.
The ICC then rated the pitch as “unsatisfactory” under the ICC On-Field and Off-Field Monitoring Process. The conditions could be different this time and the spinners could make their presence felt in the upcoming game.
Result:
The weather report is very promising for the upcoming SA vs PAK second Test. Rain during the game is very unlikely to make bad sports. With the conditions in Cape Town likely to be tough for the batsmen, the game ahead could also turn out to be an exciting contest.
