Analyst Sergio Mora defended promoter Oscar De La Hoya in response to struggling fighter Ryan Garcia’s social media attacks on him this week. Earlier this week, De La Hoya told Ryan during an interview on the AH Show that he needed to “wake up” and “grow up”.
Garcia responded by posting, “F** Golden Boy.”
De La Hoya’s Tough Love
Former six-division world champion De La Hoya’s comments were meant to get Garcia to take his career seriously as he goes downhill. As Mora points out, Ryan’s record is 1-2-1 in his last four fights, and he hasn’t fought since his upset 12-round unanimous decision loss to Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero on May 2, 2025, in New York.

Living room workouts
Instead of Garcia in the gym, who is looking for another fight in 2025, he posted workout videos of himself working out in his living room. It drew comparisons between him and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who did the same thing when his career began to collapse in September 2012.
“Oscar De La Hoya, yeah, he’s got a lot of skeletons in his closet. Why do you (Ryan) have to keep bringing it up? You haven’t amounted to anything man-made in boxing. Until you pick up your first belt, let alone six or seven divisions that Oscar did, then you’ve got to shut up, work hard in the gym, and get back to where you belong.”
The harsh reality
The problem is that Garcia doesn’t “belong in the top spot.” Aside from his upset 12-round majority decision victory over Devin Haney on April 20, 2024, he never showed that he belonged among the best. Now, with him reduced to a lounge-trained fighter, it doesn’t look like he’s going anywhere in the sport.
Garcia does not possess the talent of 1992 Olympic gold medalist and former six-division world champion De La Hoya. He never will. The large sums of money Kingry has made during his short career — $50 million — are like an anchor, suffocating the hunger he needs to improve.
Ryan’s contract with Golden Boy Promotions will reportedly end in 2026. At this point, it may not matter much to De La Hoya that he is going to lose to Garcia. He turned into a YouTuber type fighter. He doesn’t seem to be able to beat any of the top fighters at 147, and it’s the same situation at 140.
While Ryan is useful in bringing in fans due to his large social media following, his performance against Rolly and loss to Gervonta Davis show that he lacks the talent to be a world champion.
“Ryan Garcia is a top fighter, but right now he’s going in the wrong direction and not winning,” Mora said.
