Ruben Amorim warned of Man Utd ‘pressure’ from former boss

New Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has been warned by a predecessor about the intense scrutiny that awaits him when he takes over at Old Trafford next week.

Amorim was quickly chosen as the permanent replacement for Erik ten Hag and Will start work on Monday, November 11 after tying up loose ends at current club Sporting CP.

The Portuguese coach will become the United’s sixth permanent appointment since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down in 2013 after almost 27 years in charge. David Moyes was the first to try to fill the boots left by the legendary boss and he knows how much pressure there is to succeed at one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“Every newspaper in the world will have published the Erik (ten Hag) story this week. It would have been all over, because there are so many Manchester United fans all over the world,” Moyes explained in the latest episode of BBC Premier League Review podcast

“It brings a lot of pressure. It brings a lot of media who are always looking for things at Manchester United.”

Moyes himself ran into problems in 2013 when he brought some of his own coaching staff to the club with him, but he still largely used Ferguson’s aging squad after struggling to recruit in the transfer market that first summer.

The Scot expects Amorim to make changes, most likely in terms of playing style after perfecting a 3-4-3 system at Sporting that had never been seen before united.

“It would be quite a big change and changing those things takes more time,” said Moyes.

“I look at Arsene Wenger when he took over from George Graham. It took Wenger time to change Arsenal to the way they played compared to George Graham.

“So it might take a little time for him to settle in. But if the board gives him the time, his stats on what he’s doing at the moment are very good in Portugal.”
