Ruben Amorim says Manchester United will give Luke Shaw as much time as he needs to recover from his latest injury setback.
The left-back was a surprise inclusion in England’s Euro 2024 squad and made three appearances in the last 16 of the competition, starting the final as the Three Lions were beaten by Spain.
Shaw was plagued by knee and calf problems at the start of the 2024/25 season but was fit to make appearances in Amorim’s first three games as head coach after Erik ten Hag was sacked. However, the 29-year-old has since suffered a setback and was lost Wednesday’s 2-0 loss to Arsenal.
Speaking after Shaw was ruled out of the trip to the Emirates Stadium, Amorim said: “What I can say since I arrived, I see him in the medical department working hard in the gym, working hard on the pitch, we control the load during during the games, during training, he was losing weight, so he did everything.
“If he continues to behave like this, he is a top player and we need him. No matter how long it takes, I will be with him, we will help him come back, not only. Manchester United but your selection needs a man like Luke Shawso we’re here to help.”
As reported BBC SportShaw has had 75 separate spells of absence forcing him to miss games since making his professional debut for Southampton aged 16.
Shaw’s injury problems over the past year have been compounded by the absence of substitute Tyrell Malacia, who did not play at all last season after a promising debut campaign in 2022/23. However, the Dutchman is back to form and has started the latest fixtures against Bodo/Glimt and Arsenal, being substituted at half-time in both games.
Amorim has it too given his verdict on the return of teenage defender Leny Yorowho made his United bow as a substitute on Wednesday after picking up an injury in pre-season.
