Ruben Amorim has become Manchester United’s youngest manager of the 21st century after signing a deal to replace Erik ten Hag.
Former Portugal international Amorim began his managerial career in 2018 and quickly made waves in his homeland, impressing enough during a brief spell with Braga to earn a high-profile switch to Sporting CP in March 2020
Just over four years later, Amorim is taking his talents to the Premier League, having been named United’s new manager.
At 39 years and 289 days, Amorim becomes the youngest manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era and the youngest since Wilf McGuinness took over in the summer of 1969 at the age of 31 and 288 days.
united had several young managers during the club’s early years, but since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013, they have tended to opt for more experience in the dugout.
Amorim becomes the first United manager since Ferguson to be under 40. Caretaker bosses Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick were both 40, while the youngest permanent manager was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at 45 years and 296 days.
