Manchester United legend Roy Keane has launched an attack on the club’s lack of improvement under Ruben Amorim.
Keane’s rant came before the game against Liverpool at Anfield while previewing the match on Sky Sports.
Roy Keane savagely hit out at United ahead of the Liverpool game
The Irishman expressed deep frustration at United’s alarming form, which had seen them lose four games in a row to Tottenham, Bournemouth, Wolves and Newcastle, leaving them languishing in 14th place.
Speaking on Sky Sports (as quoted by The Sun), said:
“If you look at the statistics, my God, they are very bad. Obviously, the new manager has come in and there has been no response from the players, which is a big concern.”
“They don’t seem like a big group. They don’t have world class players. They don’t have a striker who can break them out of jail. The goalkeeper is not great. The players have to be responsible.”
“I just want a little bit of passion in their performance. It’s a shame what they do week in week out. You look at the tests over the last month or two and even previously and you ask yourself: ‘How can Manchester United get this far in Anfield and get a result?”
Man United players put in a solid performance against Liverpool
The players appeared to have taken Roy Keane’s fiery criticism to heart, delivering a spirited performance against the Reds.
Playing with aggression and passion, Manchester United grabbed a point, although it could have been all three had Harry Maguire not missed a golden chance in stoppage time.
Lisandro Martínez opened the scoring with a thunderous shot into the roof of the net after one defensive lapse by Trent Alexander-Arnold. However, Liverpool responded quickly as Cody Gakpo grabbed a stunning equalizer before Mohamed Salah made it 2-1 from the penalty spot after Matthijs de Ligt’s handball.
United refused to back down and in the 80th minute Amad Diallo emerged as the hero again, calmly slotting home Alejandro Garnacho’s spot-kick cross to make it 2-2.
The Red Devils had a chance to steal victory in stoppage time when Joshua Zirkzee unselfishly teed up Maguire, but the defender parried his effort as it sailed over the bar, much to Liverpool’s relief.
Roy Keane: You can’t choose when to show up
After the game, without going overboard with praise, Keane was full of praise for what he saw from his former team. However, he has criticized them for not being consistent. Speaking of performance Sky Sportssaid:
“Man Utd turned up. They showed a bit of passion, a lot of quality and a bit of fight. So did Manchester City recently.”
“The point of all this, though, is that you can’t pick and choose when you want to come to a Manchester United game.”
“I don’t think anyone would have predicted that they would score two goals today or that they would almost get it right at the end. But the key is they have to back it up.”
