MIZUNO PODIUM 5km, Battersea Park, London, December 31
Tomer Tarragano just edged out Thomas Keen with a 13:49 clocking as Joseph Tuffini was eliminated at the finish.
The trio, along with Jacon Allen, Liam Dee and half a dozen others, led Bournemouth asylum seeker Abdinasir Elm, who clocked just after the 1km mark in 2:50, some six seconds ahead, and they. at the halfway point they were still lagging behind by the same amount.
The other chasers then began to pull away as the five closed in on Elmy by the 4km mark. Then Tarragano and Keane, along with Taffin, moved past the tiresome leader as the top 15 broke in 14:30.
Tarragano, the BUCS cross-country silver medallist, who had not run 5km since 2021 when he clocked 14:19, was in new territory here, but it was not unexpected from his win and 19th place in the Euro cross-country trials. after: in Turkey that he fell here.
Keane was also in new territory with his second-place time of 13:50, but it was a surprise to see the 1:46.18 800m man line up.
Third-placed Tuffin was another to break 14 minutes for the first time, while Elmy’s class is already popular.
The women had their own elite race, with Paris Olympics 1500m semi-finalist Renee Walcott-Nolan leading Poppy Tank to the line after the pair ran more or less together throughout before winning by five seconds in 15:39. :
The Reading pair of Mia Waldman and Jess Gibbon trailed a few seconds down just after 1km, with around a dozen others along for the ride.
However, Walcott-Nolan and Tank broke through halfway before being separated near the finish line.
It was Walcott-Nolan’s first run on the roads in nearly two years, with a 15:48 under the lights here at Battersea Park topping his personal best of 15:39 at the Euro-Cross earlier in December. 15:44 was also a personal best for runner Tank.
