Wwelcome to GOLF’s Fully Equipped’s weekly tournament equipment report. Every Friday of PGA Tour weeks (plus other times, if the news calls for it), GOLF Equipment Editor Jack Hirsh will walk you through some of the biggest news about golf clubs on Tour, including changes, changes and launches.
We knew the timing of TaylorMade’s approval of its new Qi4D drivers for play was meaningful. Just a few days later, we now know that two of the company’s biggest stars have put the driver in play for the first week of availability on the global tour.
Rory McIlroy made an immediate change from a Qi10 model driver he used for all but six rounds over the past two seasons to a new Qi4D flagship model driver at this week’s HSBC Championship in Abu Dhabi. Tommy Fleetwood also joined him, sporting a Qi4D LS model from his previous Qi35 core.
“I felt like the driver was good,” McIlroy said after Round 1. “Obviously, a new driver in the bag this week. I felt it worked well.”
“Worked well” indeed.
Paired with his long bomber Marco Penge, the best DP World Tour player besides McIlroy this season, the Masters champion impressed from the top, averaging 334 yards on shots with the new driver and hitting 78 percent of his fairways. It also added new Qi4D 3 and 5 sticks to the bag.
Rory on his new TaylorMade Qi4D driver today: “Yeah, I felt like the driver was good. Obviously a new driver in the bag this week. I felt it worked well.”

But most impressive was his 355-yard drive on the 10th, where he chipped the corner on the 394-yard par-4 to reach the putting green for an easy two-shot birdie. Friday’s second round was much the same, with another 344-yard average with driver on his way to another 68.
His European Ryder Cup teammate Fleetwood also put on a display of driving in Round 1, but through accuracy rather than power. of defending FedEx Cup champion used his new Qi4D LS just four times on Thursday at Yas Links Golf Club, but ended the day missing a fairway while carding an eight-under 64. He followed that up on Friday with a 66 and is tied for the lead with Aaron Rai at 14 under, while McIlroy is six back in a tie for 20th.
Neither player has revealed much about the technology or specs of their new big clubs, but from what appears in Getty Images photos and in-hand photos from SMS on Tour, both players are sticking with similar builds to their previous models. McIlroy still has a Fujikura Ventus Black 6-X shaft, while Fleetwood has a Ventus TR Blue 6-X in his LS head.
One notable thing about the Fleetwood driver is that it appears to have reflective markers for use with the face-integrated Foresight GC Fourth Launch Monitor.
This is a technology that TaylorMade introduced last year with their Qi35 Select Fit heads, designed specifically to help fitters avoid placing reflectors (known as fiducials). Now it seems Fleetwood wants the technology in his player so he and Adrian Rietveld always have super accurate club data on the GC Quad.
Four other players this week have a new Qi4D in the bag – Angel Ayora, Jayden Schaper, Ryggs Johnston and Keita Nakajima – marking a major debut for the young driver. The driver has not yet decided on the US tour.
Ping releases S259 wedges and G440 K driver
Ping also had a big week for both its new S259 wedges and the G440 K driver.
At the DP World Tour, three players – Joe Dean, Jon Perry and Kristopher Reitan – fielded the new K driver, the apparent successor to the popular G430 Max 10K driver. But the biggest story in both tournaments is the S259 wedges.
In Mexico at the Tech World Championship, five players, including Taylor Moore, Matthieu Pavon and defending champion Austin Eckroat, put the new 259 wedges into play. In Abu Dhabi, the number of early adopters was even higher, with nine of Ping’s 13 staff players on the course adopting the new wedges.
Again, there isn’t much tech information out there about the S259. What is apparent from the images of the new wedge is a significant design change to the vibration dampening pad at the rear of the wedge from the S159.
Like TaylorMade, Ping has yet to plant the new 440K driver on the PGA Tour.

This section is dedicated to an interesting photo we took recently on Tour, but haven’t had a reason to share yet. For this week, check out an early prototype of Scotty Cameron’s OC backpack, which was released this week and captured on Tour in April.

Odds and ends
A few more gear changes and notes we’re following this week.
Erik van Rooyen added a set of Callaway prototype CB irons to the bag. We’re not sure about all of them, but we do know that he’s the only personnel with them in the game, having silenced them during Sanderson Farms Championship Week. Equipment director Johnny Wunder has information on what they might be, but will continue to dig as we go along.
Nothing better than year end outfit news!!

A selection of GOLF content from the past week that may interest you.
Scotty Cameron enters the low torque market with the new OC neck option – Scotty Cameron finally announced their long awaited entry into the low torque machine market with the Fastback OC (Onset Center) and Phantom 11R OC. Read on for new tire options and why one has potentially found a place in my bag.
Scotty Cameron Style Studio Fastback OC Putter
An extension of the popular Studio Style Fastback design, the Studio Style Fastback OC is a low-torque model that features the same ring-weight, high-stretch, multi-material design of other Fastback models, but with Scotty’s tour-proven OC technology package. Featuring the initial placement of the center axis behind the leading edge of the throwing face, the straight axis is positioned exactly in line with the CG location of the thrower’s head and tilted 1° forward. This allows for low-torque performance and face alignment that stays square with the trail. STUDIO STEEL CARBON (SCS) FACE INSERT The Studio Style Fastback OC features a chain-milled carbon steel (SCS) insert for smooth sound and feel, treated with an electrodeless nickel coating for added durability with aerospace-inspired vibration damping for tuned sound, feel and performance. CUSTOM BLACK SHAFT Custom designed for the new OC machines, each model includes a special KBS x Scotty Cameron black shaft with optimal flex, unhindered reach and precise feel. CUSTOM MATADOR GRIP With an integrated chainlink texture, each new OC gauge includes a custom 11-inch Matador mid-size grip in black with bright red and cool gray accents.

Scotty Cameron 2025 Phantom 11R OC Putter
Inspired by prototype models made for tournament players, the Phantom 11R OC – “R” for “round” and “OC” for “launch center” – is a new Phantom hammer with rounded corners in a revolutionary low-torque package. With a straight shaft installed directly in line with the model’s CG, the Phantom 11R OC is designed with a heavier head to ensure high stability while maintaining very low torque during impact. CHAIN-LAW FACE MILLING TECHNOLOGY The chain-link face milling technology structure reduces ball-to-ball face contact points to dampen sound and improve spin characteristics while maintaining feel and optimizing feedback.
