On Saturday at Torrey Pines was supposed to be everything for Scottie Scheffler and Rory Mcilroy.
The third round of 2025 Invitational Genesis It was the first time that both stars had been in the first four of a PGA Tour event entering the third round.
While Davis Thompson held the lead of 36 holes in the 8th, Saturday seemed to end up being a Rory-Scottie duel in the famous southern course of Torrey Pines.
As is often the case, golf had different plans.
The third round of Mcilroy can be best characterized by two statistics: it struck only 5 of the 14 right roads and lost 3.905 shots in the greens. The latter is the worst round of Mcilroy in that category in PGA Tour in 10 years, for Justin Ray.
The big champion four times had a few early chances to go down to a hot start, but he lost an 8 -meter blow for Birdie at no. 2 and a 13 -meter blow for Birdie at no. 3. Then Bogeys came to Par-5 Sixth and PAR-3 eight before finally making his first bird at no. 9.
Mcilroy’s day did not improve in the nine rear after he lost a five-legged Birdie kick in par-5 14 before double-3 16. He lost a three-legged Bogey. When the dust settled, Mcilroy fired a 2-top 74, which left it on the 3rd for the tournament and five shots back of the 54-year-old Patrick Rodgers leader.
Movement Day was no longer loved for the best player in the world.
Scheffler started the day only one shot from Thompson and quickly linked the superiority to a bird at no. 4.
Then everything else came.
Scheffler bogeyed both par 5s in the nine front-including one four pedestrians lost for the first in no. 6-And then linked his purpose in the 14th hole of the 14th left and in the bushes.
After receiving an unbearable, Scheffler hit his third shot at the Greenside bunker. He was sprayed and left himself 7 meters, 7 inches for Bogey. Scheffler struck with his faith for sure, but she drained the right edge, and he was in pairs.
Two holes later, in par-3 16, Scheffler once again lost his purpose, starting it over the green and in deep depth. A good pitch gave him a 15 -meter look at par, but Scheffler burned another advantage, which left him to look at Caddy Ted Scott in disbelief.
The final damage to the world No.1 was a 4-gi 76, which left it connected to Mcilroy in the 3rd.
It was Scheffler’s worst round since the last round of the 2022 player championship.
In the day, Scheffler lost 3,893 strokes in the greens and was only four for seven clashes. He also lost more than half a stroke from Tee.
He only made 34 meters of strokes. Mcilroy did only 55.
On Saturday in La Jolla, Caliph., Sunshine was billed to be a confrontation of two biggest PGA Tour stars.
It quickly evaporated in the air of southern California, leaving Rodgers on top with only Denny McCarthy and Ludwig Aberge within two shocks.
