Welcome to Play Smarta regular GOLF.com game improvement column that will help you become a smarter and better golfer.
Training gear can be incredibly useful tools for improving your movement. Heck, even the pros use them. Go to any range at a PGA Tour event and you’ll see all kinds of equipment in the hands of players.
The key for you, dear reader, is to find the FAIR training assistance. There are all kinds of devices that claim to fix your swing. But if you’re not using something that attacks the right problems, your work will be for naught.
This is why you will often see professionals using different training tools at different times during their careers. One year they may adjust their swing with one tool, and the next it will be completely different. Your golf swing will change over time, so it’s important to understand how to keep yours in a strong place.
Sometimes, when you’re in the middle of fixing something in motion, it’s all you can think about. Every time you walk past a mirror, you’ll find yourself trying out your golf swing. The good ones become like that, too, and in the case of Rory McIlroy, he has found a clever way to make sure he always has a club with him to work on his swing.
Rory’s Little Club
As you can see in the clip above, McIlroy is swinging a small club in competition at this week’s DP World Tour event. No, it’s not a radical new club he’s packing in his bag, but rather a useful training aid he can use just about anywhere.
“It’s a small club that I can take with me anywhere,” says McIlroy. “Bring him to the hotel room with me, leave him at home whenever I want to feel with him.”
However, being mobile is not the only use for the little club. The grip on it is cast (much like that Scottie Scheffler use every day), which helps him reinforce good habits when holding the club.
“It helps sometimes because my left hand grip gets a little tight sometimes,” he says.
Finally, with a large swing weight in the head, McIlroy can better feel where the clubhead is when he swings it—whether on the range or at home—which is a huge asset when trying to create a new feel. at the top. of the backlog.
“I’ve been using it since basically October when I was trying to make a little change in my backstroke,” he says. “It comes with me everywhere.”
