Rohit Sharma’s Test retirement comes as Ajit Agarkar prepares for a tough debate

Rohit Sharma is going through a bad patch

The captain of the Indian National Cricket Team was one of the best batsmen in the previous cycle of the ICC World Test Championship. He had just 5 single-digit sacks in 43 WTC snaps from 2019-23.

However, that all changed dramatically this year, as those numbers doubled to 10 single-digit sacks in 25 innings in 2024.

Rohit Sharma’s form has been a major concern for Team India and according to several cricket experts, it directly affects his decision-making ability on the field.

In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Rohit Sharma recorded scores of 3, 6 and 10 in his first two matches before dismissing Pat Cummins for 5 balls 3 in the ongoing Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. In 2nd place.

It was the fifth time Indian captain Rohit faced Australian captain Pat Cummins in Test cricket. This is a record, as is the list of captains with the most dismissals of opposing captains in Tests, with Pat Cummins joining Richie Benaud and Imran Khan after dismissing Rohit Sharma 5 times, who also dismissed Ted Dexter and Sunil Gavaskar the same number of times.

Overall, Indian National Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma has been terrible, registering just 155 runs in his last eight test matches at a terrible average of 11.07.

Rohit Sharma is set to retire against AUS after the Sydney Test if…

According to a report in PTI, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief selector Ajit Agarkar is currently in Melbourne and may have some tough discussions with Rohit about his future in Test cricket.

The general belief is that Rohit will have to bid farewell to Test cricket after the fifth and final Test match against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground if India fail to reach their third consecutive WTC final.

Also, the report suggests that Rohit is not comfortable giving the opening slot to KL Rahul and batting in the middle order after missing the Perth Test. India therefore had to drop Shubman Gill, the No. 3 batsman, to replace Rohit Sharma at the top and keep KL Rahul at No. 3 in the Melbourne Test.

I think his career could definitely be over – Mark Waugh

Former Australian National Cricket Team player Mark Waugh also believes that the Indian captain’s Test career will end after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

He said that only some miraculous performances with the bat can save Rohit’s Test career.

“If Rohit Sharma doesn’t do something in the last three overs, I think his career could definitely be over,” Waugh said on Fox Sports.
