The BCCI Naman Awards 2026Last Sunday was supposed to be a grand celebration of the golden age of Indian cricket. After a historic season where India clinched an unprecedented five ICC trophies, the stars took to the red carpet to honor the architects of those victories. However, what was supposed to be a flawless tribute night quickly turned into a social media firestorm. During the live broadcast, a significant technical oversight left the fans Rohit Sharma disappointed, the prestigious ceremony was overshadowed by a heated debate over captaincy credits.
Rohit Sharma fans fuming over schedule error involving Shubman Gill at Naman Awards 2026
He honored the legends like the evening Roger Binny, Rahul Dravidand Mithali Raj Colonel C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award, the atmosphere changed as the on-screen graphics flashed during the segment’s presentation Shubman Gill. As Gill, the current Indian ODI and Test captain, appeared on screen, the broadcast banner announced him as “Winning Captain, Champions Cup 2025.”
The mistake was immediately noted by Rohit’s eagle-eyed supporters. In fact, it was Rohit who led the Men in Blue to Champions Trophy glory in 2025, culminating in a tactical masterclass against New Zealand in the final. While Gill was certainly the cornerstone of that victory, entering the tournament as the world’s No. 1 ODI batsman and scoring a crucial unbeaten century against Bangladesh, he was not the man at the helm in that particular tournament.
Rohit fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize the BCCI for what they perceived as the “disrespectful erasure” of the veteran opener’s leadership legacy. Gill, though, has since taken over the reins of captaincy and led India, including a dominant five-Test series win. EnglandThe confusion touched a nerve about how the contributions of pass captains were documented.

Shubman Gill is being touted as the winning captain of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on social media.
But the truth is that India won this trophy under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma.
So why is Shubman Gill’s name associated with it?
What is your opinion? pic.twitter.com/cEjkwc6H6T

🚨 BIG MISTAKE IN BCCI’S NAMAN AWARDS 🚨
At the BCCI Naman Awards, Shubman Gill was named as the captain who won the 2025 Champions Trophy, although Rohit led India to the title.
Rohit fans said, “This disrespects Rohit Sharma and rewrites history!” 🤯pic.twitter.com/qLhBQJ0NF6

Graphic error in BCCI Awards shows Shubman Gill as captain of Champions Trophy 2025 instead of Rohit Sharma.
The mistake shows how quickly cricket’s institutional memory can be clouded – even when the tournament took place months ago.
Fans calling it “rewriting history”… pic.twitter.com/zBhp7sids3

Big mistake of world’s richest cricket board, @BCCI
They pictured a senior team for the U19 Women’s championship and somehow made Shubman Gill the captain for the 2025 Champions Trophy where Rohit Sharma was the winning captain.
The richest board,… pic.twitter.com/cAKeINb613

Shubman wins Polly Umrigar Award in historic midseason
Despite the digital drama, the night remained a professional milestone for Gill, who was adjudged the Best International Cricketer (Men). By collecting prestigious bags Polly Umrigar AwardGill cemented his status as heir to the throne of India. This marks his second Cricketer of the Year title, following his first win in 2023, mirroring the 2025 season where he scored 754 runs in the Test series against England alone, at an amazing average of 75.40.
“Many greats and legends of Indian cricket have received this award before so it is a great honour“, Gill said during his acceptance speech. He was quick to deflect individual praise for the team’s collective achievement, noting that winning five ICC trophies in one cycle was a feat that could never be replicated.
The ceremony also celebrated the phenomenon Smriti Mandhana, she secured the best international cricketer (women) award for the fifth time. Mandhana’s year 2025 was nothing short of legendary as she became the first woman in history to score more than 1,000 ODI runs in a calendar year. The event was a reminder of India’s current global dominance, even as a temporary graphical glitch briefly stole the headlines as the BCCI awarded the side that won five trophies.
