Roach grilled by fans for “apologies” after Cruz draw

Lamont Roach (25-1-3, 10 KOs) is being grilled by fans today for being in cry baby mode, racking up excuses for why he didn’t defeat WBC interim light welterweight champion Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz (28-3-2, 18 KOs) last Saturday night at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Apologies Start early

After the match, Roach gave three excuses for not getting the win:

  • Broken hand in the fifth
  • Cruz’s hold
  • Low blows from Pitbull

Sounding like he was in pure victim mode, Roach said, “All I’m asking is for a level playing field.”

Point deduction saved Him

Fans saw this as a classic example of Lamont refusing to admit he wasn’t good enough to beat ‘Pitbull’ Cruz. He was spinning a narrative to deflect criticism for his failure. Cruz was too good for him and would have won the fight if not for the seventh round’s no-warning penalization of him.

Before the fight, Roach boasted about how easy it would be to dethrone Cruz and painted a picture of how he would be considered one of the top pound-for-pound fighters.

Take the L Like a Man

When it came to fulfilling his vision, Roach couldn’t get the job done, was knocked down and dominated the first half of the contest. If the referee had not taken a point from Cruz in the seventh round without a prior warning about a low blow, Lamont would have lost the fight.

If Roach took the high road and flat out said he wasn’t good enough, the fans would respect him more. His ‘Robbed Twice’ narrative is a sign that he cannot confront the truth about himself. He is not at elite level.

The scores were: 113-113, 113-113 and 115-111 for ‘Pitbull’ Cruz.

“All I’m asking is a level playing field. I’m going to show my skills and my grit. And I think I broke my hand in the fifth round,” Lamont Roach said at the post-fight press conference after his 12-round majority draw against Isaac Cruz.

“You could tell by the way he started moving around the ring that I was disrupting him, I started winning rounds, and that was after I broke my hand.
