The boxing world was fed. Ricky Hatton, Stockport’s Own, the Bloke who took Manchester sound to Las Vegas and back, was found dead at his home in Hyde. He was only 46.
Police were called to Bowlacre Road in Gee Cross early Sunday morning, where a body was discovered at 06:45, police in Greater Manchester confirmed death, and according to MANCHESTER EVENING NEWSis not considered suspicious. GMP said: ‘We can confirm that we found a body at an address on Bowlacre Road in Gee Cross today, Sunday, September 14 at 6:45. Death is not considered suspicious. ‘
A fighter who shows the world his scars
The truth is, Ricky was never just another world champion. He must have fought for belts, but he also fought himself. He talked straight about the darkest things – drinks, drugs, depression, even suicide attempts. Most would have hidden it. He didn’t. He laid it out, mourning, because that’s who he was.
And a few months ago, he talked about one more run, one last fight in December. That little spark of comeback, and now this news – it feels cruel. As life slipped into a low blow, no one saw.
Loved ones, defective and always ours
Within the ropes, Hatton was pure Manchester. Fair, rogue, relentless. He piled up world titles, took Fighter of the Year in 2015 and gave our evenings abroad where Brits Vegas, pint glasses and all took over. If you were there, you will never forget the sound. Thousands of fans protruded ‘Blue Moon’ until their throat went. He carried it with him in every fight.
He was not polished. He wasn’t perfect. That’s why he mattered. He was one of us – a graphter, a boy who got up, but still seemed to be able to step back in Hyde and buy his own round in any bar.
Ricky Hatton would have turned 47 next month. He is far too young, but he leaves behind something that can measure no belt. Nights, memories and the feeling that a child could fight the world from the road.
Boxing lost a real one. Manchester lost a boy. And our destiny – we lost Ricky.
Cheers, champ. Always ours.
All of us at Boxing News 24 want to send our deepest condolences to Ricky’s family, friends and fans at this heartbreaking time.
