Let’s be honest here, hitting a flop shot is not for everyone. Sure, the putt is useful — like when you’re on the short side and need to quickly stop a ball on the green — but actually putting it away is easier said than done.
As a medium handicapper, I know this all too well.

For example, my setup is usually solid and I open the balcony enough to use it club dance against the terrain. But then I seem to either lean into the rear (causing a headshot), or slow down in the turn (shredded city).

The biggest concern for many amateurs when hitting the flop is simply commitment—that is, trusting that the setup, control of the club and swing speed is ok.
When in doubt, then a scary chunk or skull shot occurs.
Fowler says job number one is opening the club.
“Obviously, the face has to be open, but the weight is going to stay pretty consistent and mostly on (the lead side), and the ball (on the front foot) with the weight going to stay toward that front side,” he says. . . “I like to feel the face as open spin and then hold it (at the top of the backswing) so it exposes the bounce (coming down into the shot).
As Fowler moves through impact, he says he tries to make sure he finishes with his weight forward.
So while the flop shot can be tricky to master, by keeping things simple, trusting in the necessary steps and committing to the shot, you can see success like Fowler does.
