Newcastle United were keen to improve their defensive unit during the summer transfer window and Marc Guehi was on their radar.
According to reports, Newcastle failed with multiple bids to sign the Crystal Palace defender at the beginning of the season. A report of Daily Mail now claim they were offered the chance to sign Axel Disasi from Chelsea as an alternative to the England international.
The 26-year-old French defender has been linked with a move away from Chelsea in recent months, but Eddie Howe was not interested in signing the player for Newcastle. Paul Mitchell pitched the idea to the Newcastle manager, who quickly rejected the opportunity.
It appears that Howe was right in his assessment of Chelsea’s defence. The 26-year-old has been pretty mediocre for Chelsea and would have been an underwhelming signing for Newcastle. The Blues paid £39m for him but he has yet to prove his qualities for them. So far it has been a failure at Stamford Bridge, and Newcastle need better players if they are to push for major trophies.
Newcastle need a quality defender
It’s no secret that Newcastle need defensive reinforcements, and it will be interesting to see if they can sign a quality centre-back in January.
Guehi would have been an exceptional acquisition for them. The Crystal Palace defender has proven his quality in the Premier League and is on the radar of multiple European clubs. He has all the tools to become a top player in the Premier League.
He is already well established in English football and has proven to be a reliable player for the Eagles. Newcastle need to look for quality players like him if they want to build a formidable team.
