Chelsea captain Reece James has vowed to “come out on top” after suffering another devastating injury setback.
The 24-year-old has played just 654 minutes of football since being handed the captain’s armband by Mauricio Pochettino in August 2023, the equivalent of just over seven full games.
James recently returned Chelseaof the team, starting against Liverpool, Newcastle United and Manchester United, but saw his reintegration into the team carefully managed by new manager Enzo Maresca, dropping to the bench 1-1 draw with Arsenal.
Maresca revealed it on Thursday James had suffered another hamstring injury in training, with a report from the telegraph confirming that a scan will take place next week once the swelling in the affected area has subsided.
The club had hoped to learn the extent of James’ injury this weekend, but now have to wait before finding out how long the academy graduate will be out.
Meanwhile, James has taken to social media to address his latest issue, posting on Instagram: ‘This message is for the people who understand and respect what I’m going through… I really appreciate your support.and kind words go further than you could ever imagine.
“And just to touch myself… I’m doing well, I’ve been better and I’ve been worse. Another challenge ahead accepted. I’ll eventually come out on top. Against all odds.
“Lastly, I would like to talk about the upcoming holidays, these times are tough for everyone! I wish you all a happy and peaceful holiday season.”
Chelsea are at least well-stocked in the full-back department after signing Malo Gusto from Lyon in January 2023. The 21-year-old has become a regular at full-back, showing versatility to play on both sides when needed, and he is ready to continue operating on the right in the absence of James.
