Carpe cool rookies beat Aragon by Perron and Uriart
The 17-year-old Spaniard takes Alvaro Carpe’s Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup points tally to 33 as the season continues. Argentina’s 16-year-old Valentin Perrone almost overtook him at the line, missing out by just 0.026s after a thrilling battle on his KTM. Third was Spain’s Brian Uriarte, another just 0.052 behind.
Uriarte is still second in the points table and, crucially, Perrone has moved up to third in chasing premiership thanks to zero points from two crashes.
The race was split into two halves following a red flag due to a rider who fell on the track, but was later found to be uninjured. The first race was stopped after 4 laps, the 2nd part ran for 5 laps and decided the overall result.
Carpe won’t stop winning.
“I feel like I handled the race well, I was running fast and leading almost all the time. It was fast enough that the three of us separated from the others. I looked back and saw that it was just the three of us and Rico was some distance behind us.
“I knew I had a great plan and line for the back straight and the last corner, so I was happy to lead in the last lap.”
“I’m very happy with this triple win. That means tomorrow is my first match point. I have to stay calm and give 100%. I don’t just play for points, I want to win because that’s what I enjoy.”
Peron hoped to be wrong
“At the beginning of the first class, I started running a little slower and trying to settle down. So I didn’t use all the tires and like that, there was something left at the end. So the red flag was perfect for this, it shortened the race and I had a little tire left at the end.
“In the last lap the grip was not too bad and in the last corner Carpe was very fast. My only chance was to stay behind him and hopefully get him out of the drift stream hoping he made a mistake but he did exactly that, my bike was spinning in the last corner and he made no mistakes.
Uriarte tried everything
“Well, it was tough but I managed to get the stage. I was feeling confident because I was pushing at the beginning and the tire was giving me a lot of confidence. I had a good balance between me and the bike. The red flag didn’t help because when I ran my speed and after the stop the tire was destroyed, I felt it was over after a lap of sight.
“Lucky, I was able to go with Alvaro and Valentin and get away from the others. I was really struggling in the fast corners and I struggled to stay with the first two. The other two managed to save the tires a bit and I couldn’t catch them, it was close but there was no way to finish in front.
Quiles slip to 4th in title chase.
“I’m a bit angry, but this is a race,” the 16-year-old Spaniard said after the race. He crashed out due to a problem with Hakeem Danish and the 17-year-old Malaysian was given a ‘double lap penalty for irresponsible riding’.
