Ravichandran Ashwin names three greatest Indian pacers in IPL history

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a stage for the best fast bowlers in world cricket over the years. While overseas stars have often grabbed the headlines, several Indian pacers have earned legendary reputations through consistency, skill and match-winning performances. From swinging the new ball under lights to executing pinpoint yorkers in pressure situations, these bowlers have defined eras in the cash-rich league and played a vital role in shaping its competitive edge.

Ravichandran Ashwin picks the top three Indian pacers in the IPL

Former Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recently shared his views on the best Indian fast bowlers in IPL history, named Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrahand Sandeep Sharma as his first three choices.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin highlighted the unique strengths of each bowler while also pointing out the subtle differences in their styles. He admitted that while there may be a gap between Bumrah and Sandeep in terms of pace and ability, the latter’s effectiveness cannot be overlooked.

Ashwin particularly praised Sandeep Sharma’s skill set, noting his ability to swing the new ball and execute variations like the knuckleball. He also highlighted the Rajasthan Royals pacer’s character, especially in the high-pressure death overs, and called him a bowler of great character despite lacking pace or brilliance.

“There is a big difference between Sandeep Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah. But the three best Indian fast bowlers in the IPL are Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Sandeep Sharma. Sandeep Sharma is very close to them. He swings the new ball, he has a versatile ball and Rajasthan Royals also return it because he has a lethal character. 140 kmph but effective.” Ashwin said.

Why does Ashwin’s choices make perfect sense?

Ashwin’s selection resonates strongly with IPL followers as the trio represents excellence in various phases of T20 innings while maintaining excellent longevity.

Bhuvneshwar stands tall as one of the most successful pacers in IPL history. Known for his skill with the new ball, he recently became the first fast bowler to cross the 200-wicket mark in the tournament. His back-to-back Purple Cap wins in 2016 and 2017 remain a testament to his consistency and ability to dominate top-tier batters with swing and accuracy.

Bumrah, the spearhead of the Mumbai Indians attack, is regarded as the gold standard in T20 fast bowling. His exceptional control, reflected in a career economy rate of under 7.50 along with his deadly yorkers, has made him one of the most feared death bowlers in the world. Bumrah’s composure under pressure and ability to perform in tight moments have been key to Mumbai’s success over the years.

Meanwhile, Sandeep has earned a reputation as one of the most underrated yet highly effective bowlers in the IPL. A powerplay specialist, he has consistently troubled top-order players and has an impressive record in early deliveries. Notably, his success against elite players like Virat Kohli – whom he has dismissed time and again – highlights his tactical intelligence and execution.
