Ratings of players as five-star Spurs are rampant

Tottenham Hotspur ended their three-game Premier League winless run in emphatic fashion by demolishing bottom-of-the-table Southampton 5-0 at St Mary’s.

The Lilywhites were on their way within the first minute of the game thanks to the recalled James Maddison, who latched on to Djed Spence’s fantastic through ball to beat Alex McCarthy.

Son Heung-min doubled the lead, drilling home at the back post, before Dejan Kulusevski reacted quicker to Southamptonfrom the penalty area to make it three before quarter time.

A shell-shocked Saints sacrificed Kamaldeen Sulemana to try and turn things around, but things got worse for Russell Martin and his reshuffled side when Pape Matar Sarr raced past a timid defense to make it a fourth on 25 minutes.

Maddison, starting in midfield alongside Sarr and Lucas Bergvall, added more salt to Saints’ first-half wounds, firing superbly into the top corner from an acute angle after Son had flicked on a wonderful pass weighted with the outside of the boot behind Taylor. Harwood-Bellis and Jan Bednarek.

Southampton came through the second half unscathed but remain rooted to the bottom with 13 defeats to their name after 16 games, their goal difference now a pitiful -25 after this latest implosion. The Spurs, meanwhile, are in the top half of the Premier League table after Brentford’s defeat at London rivals Chelsea.

The spurs climb into the upper half of the Premier League table as a result of their impressive victory, while Southampton remain rooted to the bottom with 13 defeats to their name after 16 games; their goal difference is now a pitiful -25 after this latest implosion.
